If you’re on the hunt for an unforgettable thrifting experience, you might want to take a trip to Horseheads, New York — and not just for the secondhand treasures.
Juliet Motyka, a lively and witty thrifter who’s traveled all over the country in search of unique finds, stumbled upon something truly unexpected during her visit to Gifted Goods II. While the shop offered plenty of appealing items, the most charming “find” wasn’t for sale at all.
From the moment Juliet walked in, she was welcomed by Brutus — the store’s adorable and unofficial “employee.”
The Store’s Most Lovable Staff Member

Brutus has been greeting customers for years, and he’s perfected the art of making every visitor feel right at home.
“When I walked into the thrift store, Brutus came and said hello right away. He was this cute little ball of energy … and then I took a few steps inside of the building, and then I, all of a sudden, had a ball by my feet,” Motyka told The Dodo.

Being a dog owner herself, Juliet knew exactly what that meant. She gave the ball a little kick, and Brutus was instantly hooked.
As he ran after it, Juliet began wandering the aisles in search of hidden gems — only to notice that she now had a furry shopping companion.
“Brutus followed me around the entire time. The only time he stopped was when a younger couple of girls came in and started playing with him, so somebody else took my job,” Motyka said.
A Game That Never Ends
Whichever aisle Juliet explored, Brutus was right there beside her, patiently rolling the ball back in her direction.
Naturally, she couldn’t let him down. She kept the game going, careful to avoid sending the ball into any shelves or displays.
“Every time I kicked it, he was ready — that’s what he expected. It’s like it’s what I was supposed to do,” Motyka explained.

When the time came for Juliet to leave, Brutus seemed disappointed, but only for a moment. As soon as another customer stepped through the door, he perked right up, tail wagging, ready to charm his next playmate.
Gifted Goods II is cherished by locals not just for its selection and unbeatable deals, but also for its community spirit and charitable work supporting the aneurysm community. And, of course, for Brutus — whose warm welcome and playful nature turn every visit into something memorable.
After all, how many thrift stores can boast about having a friendly, four-legged greeter who turns your shopping trip into a game of fetch?
It’s safe to say that for many customers, Brutus alone makes the trip worthwhile — and leaves them smiling long after they’ve left.
