Small Dog Peeked Out From The Brush In Indiana, Then Strangers Started Coming For Him

Small Dog Peeked Out From The Brush In Indiana, Then Strangers Started Coming For Him

Andrew was driving his tow truck along a wooded road in Fort Wayne, Indiana, when something unusual caught his eye in the brush.

Through the muddy undergrowth and tangled branches, a tiny face suddenly appeared.

That brief glimpse was enough. He stopped the truck immediately, got out, and moved closer to see what was hiding there.

Low beneath the trees was a small brown dog, alone, trembling, and pressed into the brush as if he had been trying to disappear.

A Frightened Dog Hides Beneath The Trees

Andrew stepped out and cautiously approached the area where he had seen movement.

His instincts were right. Nestled low in the brush, shivering and alone, was a small brown dog.

Before the pup could run, Andrew quickly snapped a photo and posted it to his Facebook page, hoping someone might recognize the animal.

He also forwarded the image to Lost Dogs of Fort Wayne, a local group committed to reuniting missing pets with their families. If this dog had someone searching for him, Andrew wanted to help them find him.

The moment the LDFW team saw the post, they sprang into action. One member, joined by another dog lover, headed out to search the area. Soon, four more volunteers joined the effort, all determined to bring the dog to safety.

They spotted him again not long after, this time across a narrow creek. With patience and care, they managed to reach him, lift him from the mud, and carry him to safety.

He was taken directly to Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control (FWACC) for evaluation.

A New Name And A Fresh Start

At the shelter, the staff gave the dog a full medical exam and the attention he desperately needed. They named him Joey.

“When we heard of how many people … were willing to drop everything they were doing to come rescue Joey, it gave us hope. His rescue is a testimony to how powerful a group of animal lovers can be,” said Delaney Atkinson, FWACC community outreach educator.

Joey was still weak and recovering from his ordeal, but he didn’t hesitate when offered toys. Soon, he was bouncing around the room, tail wagging and eyes shining.

Day by day, Joey’s strength returned. His confidence grew, and the scared, muddy dog who once hid in the woods began to transform. His resilience moved everyone at FWACC.

Joey became a symbol of how healing is possible, no matter the past.

A Connection That Changed Everything

Joey’s story resonated deeply with the shelter team, who continued sharing updates on their Facebook page.

One woman saw his photos and felt an immediate pull and knew she had to meet him. When she and Joey met face to face, the bond was instant.

Today, Joey is thriving in his new home. He’s surrounded by love, a fellow dog sibling, and two cats. After everything he endured, Joey now lives the life he always deserved, one filled with warmth, companionship, and joy.
