Getting to understand dogs isn’t always straightforward. Each one is unique and requires a gentle approach to truly connect with them.
Some dogs are naturally shy, while others are outgoing and playful no matter who they’re with. They come with so many different personalities.
This means it’s crucial to adapt to our dogs since it helps them trust us, and that’s the most important thing for any owner.
When this fearful dog arrived at a shelter in Massachusetts, she was overwhelmed, but then someone came along who transformed her experience.
She Felt Nothing But Fear

Mike Byrnes described his first encounter with Roxie as “dreadful.” This dog was poorly socialized and didn’t have any social skills.
She didn’t know how to behave around people or other dogs. Most of the time, she barked at anyone she disliked, and that happened quite often.
Mike wasn’t bothered by this. Actually, he preferred helping dogs with behavior problems because it meant he could assist them in healing and adapting to the world.
After that, he visited Roxie at least twice a week at the shelter. He wanted to slowly get her comfortable with him and take things one step at a time.

At eight years old, Roxie didn’t have much patience left. It took several visits before she started warming up to Mike. They gradually became good friends.
It took even more weeks before Roxie let Mike put a leash on her, but she finally did, and that was huge progress.
As their bond grew, he took her on walks more often, and Roxie happily played outside as long as she could.
Knowing how much he cared for her, Mike wanted to adopt Roxie right away, but he lived somewhere in Massachusetts that didn’t allow dogs, so that was a problem.
Roxie Got The Best News

Mike also knew Roxie wouldn’t easily get along with new people, which was another challenge, but it wasn’t the end of the story.
He was saving money to buy a new home where he could live with Roxie. It would take some time, but he was patient.
Meanwhile, he kept visiting and taking Roxie on playdates. He even took her to a pet-friendly hotel so she could have a break from the shelter.
Eventually, Mike bought his new house. The moment that happened, he brought Roxie to her permanent home.

Though not officially adopted yet, it was basically a done deal. Roxie was thrilled to finally leave the shelter behind.
Her change from a scared dog to one full of happiness is incredible. Mike showed that all she needed was patience and care.
He also recognized she was the perfect dog who only wanted to love and be loved. That’s why he was the perfect human for her. I’m glad things worked out so well for Roxie.
