Mississippi Shoppers Notice Pregnant Stray Circling Dollar General Lot And Decide To Return Next Day

Shugy was a pregnant stray doing her best to endure hunger, cold nights, and the loneliness of surviving on her own. All she wanted was a safe corner where she could rest and eventually welcome her puppies into the world.

She chose the parking lot of a Dollar General in Mississippi as her refuge. Each day she approached passing shoppers with careful hope, yet most continued on without stopping.

Weeks turned into months, and still she returned to the same place, quietly waiting for someone to see her and care enough to pause.

What Shugy could not know was that one particular visit would finally bring the turning point she had been waiting for.

A Simple Stop Turns Into A Rescue

Mary Smith and her mother were shopping at the Dollar General when they saw Shugy. Her swollen belly made it clear she was close to giving birth, and they felt immediate concern for her and the puppies she carried.

They left, but the image stayed with them. The next day, they returned and spoke with an employee, who told them Shugy had been hanging around the lot for months with no home.

Mary and her mother decided to help. Shugy seemed to want comfort, but fear still held her back.

With calm voices and patience, they earned enough trust to guide her away from the parking lot and into their car.

At home, they focused on basic care. They gave her a needed bath, and the oil stains in her fur suggested she had been sleeping under cars to stay warm.

Afterward, they set up a quiet, cozy area where she could finally lie down without being chased off. For the first time in a long while, she had clean bedding and a full bowl nearby.

Rest Takes Time, But Safety Helps

Shugy was restless at first, as if she could not believe she was safe. Mary and her mother stayed nearby until she began to relax, and she eventually fell asleep from exhaustion.

The next day, they took her to Nunnery Veterinary Hospital in Summit, Mississippi. The vet diagnosed heartworm, hookworms, and ear mites, and estimated Shugy was about a year old. Despite everything, she remained gentle and won over the clinic staff.

Once her treatment plan began, Shugy returned home to recover.

Over the next several days, she started to decompress. She explored the yard, accepted affection more readily, and her tail wagged more often as she realized she would not be run off for simply existing.

Seven Puppies Arrive One Week Later

About a week after her rescue, Shugy went into labor. Mary’s mother FaceTimed her so she could witness the moment, and Mary rushed over to meet the new mom and her babies.

Shugy delivered seven puppies and cared for them attentively.

As they grew, the home filled with tiny paws, playful energy, and constant feeding and cleanup. When they were old enough, each puppy was placed with a loving family, and the Smiths made sure everyone was set up for success.

“They were incredibly wanted and they all have great lives,” Mary told The Dodo.

The Smiths chose to keep Shugy and one of her pups, while Mary adopted another.

After months of being overlooked in a parking lot, Shugy now has warmth, safety, and a family that did not walk past.

Her story is a reminder that one decision to stop and help can change everything for an animal with nowhere else to go.
