New York Shopper Walks Into A Thrift Store And Gets An Unexpected Welcome At The Door

Anyone heading to Horseheads, New York, for a great thrifting day might expect vintage treasures, quirky finds, and shelves full of secondhand surprises. And sure, Gifted Goods II had all of that.

But for Juliet Motyka, a passionate thrifter who has explored shops all over the country, the most memorable part of her visit was not sitting on a display or tucked between old collectibles.

The store was packed with interesting items, the kind of place where every corner seems to have its own little story. Still, the real standout appeared the second she stepped inside.

Waiting at the door was Brutus, the shop’s much-loved resident dog and unofficial greeter. His warm, friendly welcome turned an ordinary stop for thrift shopping into a moment Juliet was not about to forget.

Brutus has spent years perfecting his role as the store’s most beloved greeter, making every guest feel instantly at ease.

“When I walked into the thrift store, Brutus came and said hello right away. He was this cute little ball of energy … and then I took a few steps inside of the building, and then I, all of a sudden, had a ball by my feet,” Motyka told The Dodo.

As a dog owner herself, Juliet immediately understood the invitation. She gently kicked the ball, and Brutus eagerly chased after it.

While she browsed the aisles for hidden treasures, she realized she had gained a furry companion. Brutus had clearly mastered the art of winning hearts, one game of fetch at a time.

Brutus followed me around the entire time. The only time he stopped was when a younger couple of girls came in and started playing with him, so somebody else took my job,” Motyka said.

No matter where Juliet wandered in the store, Brutus stayed close, gently nudging the ball back toward her feet.

She couldn’t resist continuing the game, careful not to send the ball into any fragile displays.

“Every time I kicked it, he was ready — that’s what he expected. It’s like it’s what I was supposed to do,” Motyka explained.

When it was time for Juliet to leave, Brutus looked briefly disappointed. But the moment another shopper entered, his tail began wagging again, ready to welcome his next playmate.

Gifted Goods II is known not only for its eclectic inventory and great prices, but also for its strong community ties and support for the aneurysm community.

And, of course, for Brutus, whose joyful presence transforms every visit into something unforgettable. Few thrift stores can claim a four-legged greeter who turns shopping into a game of fetch.

For many, Brutus alone is reason enough to return.
