A sweet dog roamed the streets without knowing where to go or whom to ask for help. With every step he took, he felt more confused and uncertain of his future.
Fortunately, rescuers came across the dog, later named Hashbrown, and immediately noticed that he looked utterly disoriented.
The doggo was admitted to the Maui Humane Society where the staff received him with open arms.
When they discovered the reason for his extreme confusion, the shelter staff was shocked.
Hashbrown Adjusts To Shelter Life
The staff realized that the doggo was completely blind. They didn’t know anything about his past. He didn’t have a microchip or a collar.
The shelter staff comforted Hashbrown and took him to the vet where he was examined. The vet confirmed that the dog had been born blind.
Hashbrown’s shelter friends assumed that he was abandoned and left to roam the streets in utter confusion.
Although the doggo couldn’t see his wonderful caregivers, he could feel their affection and care.
Hashbrown quickly showed what a sweet soul he was. He made friends with every dog he met at the shelter. He also loved spending time with people.
The pup was determined not to let his blindness stop him from enjoying his life.
Unfortunately, since the Maui Humane Society was overcrowded and the adoption rates were low, his shelter friends started looking for other shelters that would be willing to take Hashbrown in.
The staff feared that Hashbrown would have a hard time finding his forever home if he stayed at their shelter.
“…They all love him and they knew he deserved a loving home, but a special needs dog doesn’t stand a chance at a facility struggling with adoption numbers,” Kendall Schulz, adoption services director at Helen Woodward Animal Center, told The Dodo.
Knowing that the Maui Humane Society was at full capacity, Helen Woodward Animal Center, based in San Diego, California, offered to help them.
They took Hashbrown into their care, promising to do whatever it took to find him a home.
Hoping To Start A New Chapter
Before long, Hashbrown was transferred to the San Diego rescue and placed into a wonderful foster home.
His fosters gave him a ton of love. Hashbrown felt happy and grateful to them for opening their home to him.
He bonded with all family members and showed how affectionate he was.
As much as he loves spending time with his foster family, Hashbrown longs to find his forever family.
“… We are so grateful to get this opportunity to find him the family he deserves. Dogs amaze us over and over again. They remind us how to live. If you want to know what [resilience] and kindness looks like, come meet Hashbrown,” Schulz added.
He would do best with a family who lives in a one-story residence. The pup hopes to find his humans who are open to making minor adjustments in order to facilitate a more comfortable life for him.
The doggo’s story is an inspiring story of resilience. Although his humans betrayed him and let him roam the streets in darkness and confusion, Hashbrown’s heart is full of love.
The pup is eager to give all his love to his humans. He just needs someone to believe in him and give him a loving home that his soul wants more than anything else.
