One morning at the Greenville Humane Society in South Carolina, staff arrived to begin their day and noticed something unexpected near the entrance.
A Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix had been tied outside the gate and left there overnight. Beside her sat a handwritten note that immediately caught their attention.
The message read: “My sister could not take care of her the way she needed to be. She has illnesses I don’t believe are fixable. She needs to be put down as soon as possible.”
The dog was soon identified as Remy. She had been dealing with a rare and serious heart condition, and her owner felt unable to continue the medical care she required.

Rachel Dalport of the Greenville Humane Society offered important context about the situation, saying: “It was someone who truly wanted the best for her, and just didn’t know what to do.”
Shelter staff echoed that sentiment. They believed Remy’s owner was overwhelmed and uncertain, facing a medical reality that felt impossible to manage alone.
Rather than seeing cruelty, the team saw someone trying to place Remy where help might still be possible.
Medical Exams And Immediate Next Steps
Once inside the shelter, Remy was examined by veterinary staff. They documented a grade six heart murmur along with a skin condition that suggested nutritional challenges.
The seriousness of her condition was clear, and the shelter outlined the road ahead.
“This serious condition will require an echocardiogram, at minimum. Depending on what is found during the procedure, Remy may require surgery or a lifelong medication regimen,” the shelter explained.
Covering that level of care is never simple. To help Remy and many other animals in similar situations, the team relied on their Hope Fund.
In a Facebook post, they shared: “We’ve had more sick and injured animals in our care recently than we have the funds for. We know shelters everywhere are in the same predicament.”
Answers Bring Cautious Optimism
Further testing eventually brought some encouraging news. Remy was diagnosed with B1 degenerative valve disease.
While still serious, this condition meant that surgery was not immediately required. Instead, her treatment plan now focuses on daily heart medication, care for her skin, balanced nutrition, and close monitoring by the shelter’s medical team.
Although Remy’s condition requires ongoing attention, she responded well to treatment and appeared more comfortable. Surrounded by people committed to her recovery, she finally had stability and a clear plan.

It is not yet known whether Remy has found a permanent home.
