When staff members at Furgiven Animal Sanctuary, in West Memphis, Arkansas, arrived at work around 8 a.m., they spotted an empty crate sitting by the roadside near their building.
Confused and concerned, the workers immediately reviewed the CCTV footage. What they saw shocked them. During the night, someone had dumped two tiny puppies inside the crate.
The exact time the babies were abandoned wasn’t clear at first. The footage showed the pups sitting outside the shelter as early as 2:30 a.m.
Staff searched the surrounding area frantically, but the little ones were nowhere to be found. As time passed, their fears grew that something terrible had happened.
The Frightened Puppies Return To The Spot
Lee Ridings, Director and Co-founder of the Arkansas sanctuary, suspected the puppies had been left overnight because shelters were overflowing.
“I’m sure they were left in the middle of the night because most shelters in the area are full and they were afraid they would be denied admission. I can’t confirm anything but based on the area I’d guess they were part of an accidental litter,” he told Newsweek.
Like the rest of the team, Ridings was horrified at the danger the pups had faced.
“It’s already hot here this time of year but they were left next to a busy road. Their crate was dumped maybe a foot from the road. It had no bottom, instead they lined it with roofing shingles,” he added.
At mid-morning that same day, staff finally breathed easier. The two puppies returned to the very place where they had been abandoned.
Their eyes showed fear and confusion, and they barked nervously at the rescuers.
Staff tried to tempt them with treats, but the siblings were too wary to trust people again.
Winning Back The Puppies’ Trust
The rescuers needed to move carefully so the pups wouldn’t dart onto the busy road. Speaking softly, they offered food and kindness, hoping to show the dogs they meant no harm.
Patience began to pay off. Eventually, the puppies crept closer and started eating treats directly from their hands.
With gentle persistence, staff managed to slip a leash around one pup, who was later named Dell.
His sister, soon called Brynn, remained frozen with fear. She resisted every attempt at capture.
Recognizing she needed extra time, the team placed food inside the crate and waited. At last, Brynn entered the crate on her own, and the rescuers finally secured her safely.
Both Fur Babies Are Brought To Safety
The kindhearted staff carried the siblings into the sanctuary.
Both were taken straight to the vet. The puppies were undernourished, but aside from that, they were in good health.
Surrounded by affection, Dell and Brynn slowly learned they could relax. The staff poured love into their care, and before long, their true personalities began to shine.
Soon the siblings were wagging their tails, greeting workers with smiles, and covering their hands in sweet kisses. Their once-fearful eyes now sparkled with joy and hope.
Both brother and sister turned out to be cuddle bugs, eager for attention. Now they are waiting for their forever families, ready to shower their new humans with love.
