Nothing prepares an older dog for losing the only life she has ever known.
One day there is a home, a routine, and the comfort of familiar people. The next, all of it is gone, replaced by kennel walls, strange sounds, and the confusion of trying to make sense of a world that no longer feels safe.
That was the reality for Tulip and Buffy, two 16-year-old dogs in California.
They had spent nearly their whole lives in what should have been a forever home. Then, without warning, they were sitting in a shelter instead, frightened, disoriented, and left to understand a painful change they never saw coming.
Confusion and Fear Behind Bars
Arriving at the Palmdale Animal Care Center in California,Tulip and Buffy faced a world they could not understand. Their familiar home, the life they had always known, had disappeared overnight.
“These sweet girls lost their home at 16 years old. Everything they knew and loved was ripped away from them in an instant,” Northwest Dog Project (NWDP) wrote on Instagram.
Hope appeared briefly.
A family visited the shelter and adopted the two seniors, bringing a brief spark of joy to the staff.
But that joy was fleeting.
Soon after, Tulip and Buffy were returned, with the new owners claiming the dogs “didn’t do anything.”
“Adopted a few days ago and returned because they ‘didn’t do anything’ I’m actually glad they came back so that NOW we can help them find a home where they’ll be cherished and adored,” Rita Earl Blackwell, one of the shelter’s volunteers, shared on Instagram.
The heartbreak of being abandoned twice at such an advanced age was unimaginable. Recognizing their urgent need for love and stability, Northwest Dog Project stepped in after learning about their situation.
“They have gone through too much heartbreak in a short period of time, and we want nothing more than to CHANGE that,” the rescue added.
Within days, Tulip and Buffy were moved from the shelter to a foster home, where they could begin receiving the care and affection they had been missing.
A Journey Toward Safety And Comfort
Now removed from the cold, lonely kennel, Tulip and Buffy are settling into the warmth of a temporary foster home. There, they are beginning to recover and experience love again, preparing for the next chapter of their lives.
Their eventual destination will be the NWDP senior dog sanctuary, a dedicated haven for older dogs abandoned later in life.
“They are settling into their temp foster home, where they’ll stay cozy until they can make the trip here to join the #nwdpseniorsanctuary 🙌🏼 We are so excited to meet them both, and know you all are too,” NWDP concluded.
At the sanctuary, Tulip and Buffy will have soft beds, toys, and companionship, leaving behind kennels, fear, and any threat of euthanasia.
While still in foster care, the team is actively searching for a permanent home for the pair, but for now, the priority is helping Tulip and Buffy thrive in a safe, nurturing environment where they are finally valued and loved.
