Mars’ Long Road To Recovery
Mars was first discovered by an animal control officer with Webster Animal Shelter, wandering the streets of Mississippi. His face was badly swollen and covered in painful abscesses.
Terrified and distrustful of people at first, he slowly began to change once he was safe. From that moment to today, more than 1,200 days passed.
Now estimated to be four or five years old, Mars has spent the bulk of his young life inside the shelter. His caregivers worked tirelessly to secure him a family, but the right match seemed impossible to find.
The staff could never understand why. Despite being playful and loving, Mars was continually overlooked.
They suspected unfair stereotypes played a role.
As a dark-coated, pit bull-type dog, he faced prejudice. Many assume such breeds are aggressive, which is untrue, and darker dogs are often seen as more intimidating, discouraging adopters.

Mars defied those assumptions completely. He adored people and had a gentle nature that would win over almost anyone who gave him a chance.
