Some dogs spend far too long waiting for a home that never seems to come.
Their days pass behind metal bars. Their walks always end at the same gate. Still, many greet each morning with wagging tails, holding onto the hope that one day, someone will stop and see them.
In Naples, Florida, one dog has been waiting longer than most. His name is Chase, and his story has touched everyone who’s met him. Once full of energy and curiosity, he faced a challenge that changed his life but not his spirit.
After more than 700 days in the shelter, Chase is still waiting. His story is one of patience, resilience, and a heart that refuses to give up.
A Long Wait In Naples
When Chase was admitted to Patty Baker Humane Society Naples in November 2023, no one could have predicted how long he would stay there, longing for a home.
He had been transferred from a small rural shelter after being found wandering alone.
“He had originally been found as a stray and was never reclaimed. Despite that, he was known there as a happy-go-lucky dog with a cheerful personality,” Patrizia Vila, events and outreach coordinator at the shelter, said in an interview.
At first, Chase was a playful pup eager to make friends and begin a new life. Then, just a week after arriving, everything changed.
The pup suffered his first seizure.
The team soon learned that Chase had a medical condition requiring daily medication. It didn’t change his sweet nature, but it did make finding him a home more difficult.
He’s still the same loving dog, happiest when he’s with people rather than other dogs.
Life At The Shelter
Even with his condition, Chase has become a favorite among volunteers, who often bring him out for adventures in Naples. He lights up during car rides and long walks, especially when he’s with people who care about him.
Although Chase has a wonderful personality, no one has come forward to adopt him.
“Unfortunately, his seizure disorder, though well-managed with medication, has made some potential adopters hesitant, which has contributed to his longer stay with us,” Vila added.
The staff have done everything possible to keep his days full and bright.
Life at the shelter hasn’t slowed Chase down. Frequent walks with volunteers and personal attention from staff keep him content and active.
Still, it’s not easy for those who care about him to see him overlooked.
Hoping For A Home
Determined to help him find his person, the Patty Baker Humane Society began sharing videos and updates about Chase online.
People describe him as calm, well-mannered, and one of the most loved dogs during Rescue Recess.
“Chase is looking for someone who understands that his medical condition doesn’t define him—it’s just a small part of who he is,” Vila said.
For now, Chase keeps waiting, tail wagging, eyes bright, ready to greet anyone who walks through the door. Hopefully soon, someone will stop and realize they’ve just met their best friend.
