New York Shelter Dog Waits For A Family Who Will Finally Love Him Back

Tank once believed he had found his forever home. He adored his family and trusted that he would always be part of their lives. But everything changed when they surrendered him to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter on Long Island, New York.

The reason they gave was that their other two dogs didn’t get along with him. For Tank, losing the people he loved shattered his world.

When he arrived at the shelter, he was heartbroken. He curled up in the corner of his kennel, unable to face anyone. Tank held onto hope that his family might return, even as the days passed.

Still Hoping For His Family’s Return

Each time footsteps echoed down the hallway, Tank’s ears perked up and his eyes lit with anticipation. He rushed to the kennel door, convinced his family had come back for him.

“Anytime you would come to the door, he’d kind of get perked up and be like, ‘Oh my God, is it my owner?’ And it’s just so heartbreaking to see him get let down,” Presley, a shelter staff member, told Cuddle Buddies.

When he realized it wasn’t them, his head dropped and he retreated to his corner once again.

Staff tried to lift his spirits and encourage him to go outside, but Tank resisted. His trust had been broken, and he was afraid to open his heart again.

Presley learned from a colleague that Tank refused to go on walks. She decided to meet him herself.

Seeing Tank trembling in his kennel was painful. Presley spoke softly, trying to coax him forward, but he stayed frozen in place.

She didn’t give up. She kept talking, offering treats, and showing him kindness. Eventually, Tank took a leap of faith, and agreed to walk with her.

Learning To Trust Again

As soon as they stepped outside, something shifted. Tank relaxed and began to trust.

“He turned into a completely different dog. He was so affectionate,” Presley said.

That first walk marked a turning point. From then on, Tank eagerly waited for Presley’s visits, greeting her with kisses and climbing into her lap.

Tank’s heart was full of love, and he soon bonded with Paige, another volunteer who earned his trust.

Presley later took Tank on his first foster field trip. Free from the shelter, he wagged his tail nonstop and smiled the entire time.

Seeing him so joyful and at ease was a gift. Presley hopes future adopters will be patient, giving Tank time to build trust through repeated visits.

Tank still waits at the Hempstead shelter, hoping for a family who will love him unconditionally. He’s ready to give his whole heart to someone who won’t let him down.

This gentle Pittie deserves a second chance, and with the right people, he’ll finally know what it means to be truly home.
