Heartbreak As Dog In New York Shelter Is Too Scared After Being Let Down By Owners

Dogs have an incredible ability to remember the people and moments that shape their lives. They can recall the smell of their beloved humans even years later. Sadly, this also means they never forget the pain of being abandoned.

For many pups, that heartbreak cuts deep, leaving emotional scars that can take months to heal. Roxy, a sweet dog who ended up at a New York shelter, is living proof of that.

Left behind by the family she once trusted, Roxy shut down completely and struggled to believe in people again.

A Month Of Patience And Gentle Care

At Four Legs Good in Pomona, New York, volunteer and foster caregiver Rachel Oldenburger first met Roxy. Having worked with many dogs carrying trauma, Rachel understood that rebuilding trust would take time.

At first, Roxy was frightened of everyone. She trembled whenever people came close and wanted no contact.

“She had many unpleasant experiences with people leading up to her surrender and she was terrified when she was dropped off,” Rachel explained in an Instagram post.

Their bond began with quiet, slow walks. Rachel would simply sit with her, offering silent companionship until Roxy started to relax.

Progress was gradual. After a couple of weeks, Roxy finally accepted treats. But the biggest milestone came on day 19 when, during a walk, Roxy approached Rachel on her own — asking for affection for the very first time.

From then on, things began to shift.

By day 35, Roxy was showing her true self. She rolled over for belly rubs and soaked up cuddles — something unimaginable just a month earlier.

Though still shy at times, the transformation was remarkable. She had gone from trembling in fear to cautiously enjoying life again.

Opening Her Heart To New People

When shelter volunteer Christina started spending more time with Roxy, their bond blossomed too.

“Shelter volunteer, Christina, began working with Roxy many days a week and their relationship FLOURISHED! Roxy completely came out of her shell with Christina, as well as with her children and resident dogs,” Rachel shared.

With consistent love and patience, Roxy began to shine. Beneath the fear was a sweet and affectionate pup who longed to belong.

Christina couldn’t be prouder of how far Roxy has come — but she knows this brave girl’s story isn’t finished yet.

“Roxy was a scared shy dog and her humans failed her – with me she’s happy, confident and affectionate – now she needs a home where she stays that way forever,” Christina wrote on Facebook.

Now, Roxy is ready for her next chapter: a forever home where she’ll finally feel safe, cherished, and understood.

Hopefully, the perfect family is just around the corner, ready to love her for the rest of her life.

Good luck, Roxy — you’ve earned your happy ending!
