Texas Shelter Dog Spends 2,500 Days Waiting While Others Find Homes

It’s difficult to understand why some dogs are passed over time and time again at shelters.

Even when they’re affectionate, gentle, and full of love, something keeps them from being chosen. It’s a heartbreaking reality for many, and Naco, a sweet American Pit Bull Terrier mix, knows it all too well.

This resilient dog spent more than 2,500 days at a shelter in Texas, quietly hoping that one day, someone would walk through the doors and choose him.

Years Of Being Overlooked Despite His Gentle Nature

Naco first arrived at the Animal Defense League of Texas as a stray. He had no visible injuries, no identification, and was still just a young dog looking for a fresh start.

He adjusted quickly to shelter life. His favorite pastime was lounging in the sun and relaxing beside people, making him a perfect lap dog, even at 70 pounds.

But as the days turned into years, no one came for him. Not even after 2,500 days.

“Naco has been at ADL for 2,516 days… far too long for such a wonderful boy,” Animal Defense League of Texas shared in a Facebook post.

Even after seven years, the staff couldn’t understand why visitors continued to pass him by. Naco had a strong leash pull and belonged to a bully breed, but those traits hadn’t stopped other dogs from being adopted.

He was friendly with people and got along well with other dogs. He had everything a family could want.

“He is a relaxed, go with the flow kind of guy who loves sunny spots, snacks, and hanging out with his favorite people. He has wonderful fetch skills and he shakes toys like a pro wrestler,” the Texas shelter added.

Still, Naco remained behind, watching others leave while he stayed.

“Seven years is a long time to wait. Naco has watched hundreds of other dogs come and go, always wondering when it will be his turn,” ADL wrote.

His only escape from the shelter came on weekends, when a volunteer would take him home to enjoy a few days of comfort.

During those brief visits, Naco soaked up the simple joys like stretching out on a couch, going for walks, and receiving gentle cuddles. But each time, he had to return to the shelter.

With no adoption applications and his age working against him, the staff began to fear that Naco might never find a permanent home. Then, everything changed.

After Seven Years, Naco Finally Goes Home

Thanks to his story being shared over and over again, Naco’s situation finally reached the right person. After so many years, a man finally reached out to the shelter, filling out an application for Naco.

In an emotional post on Facebook, the Animal Defense League of Texas announced the news everyone had been hoping for: Naco was finally going home.

“Naco is finally going HOME! Thank you to everyone who shared his story, rooted for him, and showed him love through the years. His 7-year wait is over, and now he gets to start the life he always deserved,” ADL wrote.

It was a moment filled with emotion. Volunteers who had spent years caring for Naco were overjoyed to see him begin a new chapter.

After so much time waiting, Naco was finally leaving the shelter behind.

Now, his days will be filled with sunshine, playtime, and the love he’s always deserved. His kennel has been replaced with a yard, and his future is bright.

Here’s to Naco’s new life. May it be filled with happiness, comfort, and endless affection.
