Every dog has a special talent that eventually amazes the people around them. For Tiki, a senior rescue dog, his clever ability became known not only to shelter workers but to everyone online.
This charming escape artist had a trick up his sleeve, and the team at the shelter was about to witness it firsthand, captured on their security cameras.
Tiki was a social boy who disliked being alone in his crate at night. So, he decided to solve the problem himself. He calmly opened the door and walked out as if it were completely ordinary, determined to find some companionship.
A Hidden Skill
Tiki, a nine-year-old stray rescued from a Michigan roadside, amazed everyone from the moment he reached the Humane Society of Huron Valley. Despite his time outdoors, he was instantly affectionate, confident, and clearly unhappy about being left alone.
Because the shelter was full, Tiki spent his first few nights in a crate inside an office.
But Tiki had other plans.
Rather than wait until morning, he managed to break free from the crate, open the office door, wander through the building, and slip out the main entrance.
Luckily, a veterinarian who arrived early spotted him outside.
Staff hoped that would be the end of his adventures, but Tiki had one more escape planned. The following night, he pulled off the same trick again, this time without anyone noticing before he made it completely out of the building.
Tiki found the front exit after weaving through several hallways and walked directly into the nearby Matthaei Botanical Gardens.
Employees there brought him back, assuming he must belong to the shelter. No one could quite figure out how he managed such a clever getaway.
Tiki Finally Finds The Perfect Home
Two weeks after the video of his escape spread across the internet, Tiki was adopted in Michigan. Sadly, his new owner had to bring him back because of his strong separation anxiety whenever left alone.
“He was adopted, until separation anxiety proved challenging. We now know he needs someone who’s home a lot right now and can work through it,” the Michigan rescue stated on Facebook.
Even so, the team stayed optimistic. They knew how affectionate and gentle Tiki was and believed his perfect match would arrive soon.
Their hope paid off.
Not long after, the shelter announced that Tiki had found a forever home with a newly retired man who was delighted to welcome him.
“He has been in one of our fosters for the past remaining portion of his time, and today Tiki hit the jackpot with his new freshly retired dad! We at HSHV wish Tiki the happiest of homes,” the rescue concluded.
Now Tiki is exactly where he belongs. And perhaps, one day, his new dad will get to witness another one of his smart little stunts—or even a repeat of his famous escape.
