Squishapotamus, a shelter dog from Austin, Texas, was in the same situation, even though his condition appeared to be unique. Squish was nearly twice the size he should have been. His every step seemed heavy. His eyes told the story of a dog who had been neglected for so long.

When Squish first arrived at Austin Pets Alive! in Texas, it was clear he had a tough road ahead.
He was a gentle giant, carrying the story of a pup who needed help. The good news was that everybody at the facility was determined to give him a new chance at life.
The staff worked hard with Squish for five months, helping him lose weight. He followed a strict meal plan and had a regular exercise routine, ultimately leading to a remarkable transformation!
Squish, who barely walked when he first arrived at the shelter, lost 45 pounds!
“We did a double take, triple take, because Squish lost 45 pounds! Thanks to the help of our medical and care teams, he’s a whole new man since arriving in April and is truly thriving today,” the Texas rescue wrote on Instagram.
What’s even more fascinating is that this once sluggish pup grew more energetic with every week. The fact that he embraced his new lifestyle so quickly is just incredible.

Today, instead of struggling to move, Squish runs, plays, and greets each day with the joy of a dog who finally feels good in his own skin.
Five months after arriving in APA, Squish no longer has sad eyes. He is friendly, gentle, and people-oriented. Plus, this striking pup is always up for a game!
“He’s always up for a game of fetch or tug-o-war and looks forward to his walks around the neighborhood, but is just as happy to lounge beside you for a cozy afternoon nap. His mellow nature and playful spirit strike the perfect balance,” Squish’s profile reads.
One thing is for sure: Squish is definitely thriving next to his caregivers. However, the staff hopes his next chapter will be about finding the people who will love him for life.
