For many older dogs, life does not get harder all at once. It happens little by little, as the years pile up and health troubles start crowding in.
Things they once loved can become difficult, then out of reach.
That is painful enough on its own, but it feels even more heartbreaking when a senior dog has no family beside them through it.
Sometimes the cost of veterinary care becomes too much, and owners feel backed into surrendering the dog who has shared their life.
That was Moose’s story.
Moose, a senior dog dealing with several health issues, was brought to a shelter in California.
By then, his future looked uncertain, heavy, and full of question marks.
Moose’s Health Challenges

Upon arriving at the Downey Animal Shelter, Moose was already struggling with serious medical conditions. For a dog with these needs, chances of adoption were limited.
Shelters often face overcrowding, and animals requiring specialized or costly care are frequently placed on the euthanasia list. Without intervention, Moose’s time at the shelter was limited.
The exact reason for his surrender is unknown. Rescuers suspect his family may have been overwhelmed by the financial and emotional demands of his care and felt unable to continue supporting him.

His condition showed years of neglect and hardship. Moose’s teeth were worn, likely from chewing on hard objects to cope with discomfort. He also suffered from severe gum disease, alopecia, and untreated dental problems.
With only a short window of two to four weeks to find him a home, Moose’s circumstances were urgent. That is when Nicole Rechtszaid, a dedicated volunteer, stepped in to transform his situation.
Nicole Steps In To Make A Difference

Nicole’s journey into fostering began after adopting her own dog, who inspired her to assist other animals in need. Moved by the many vulnerable dogs in California, she committed to fostering, discovering firsthand the profound impact of compassion.
Moose came to her attention through a friend named Amanda, who described his precarious condition. Without hesitation, Nicole offered to foster him, preventing euthanasia and giving him a real chance at recovery.
Thanks to her care, Moose began to experience comfort, safety, and attention for the first time in years. With consistent support during his foster period, he was finally able to enjoy warmth and affection.

Nicole describes Moose as a silly, affectionate boy who loves napping on the couch, playing with toys, and soaking up belly rubs. Despite his history, he remains curious and playful, exploring small new experiences each day.
His resilience proves that even senior dogs with significant health issues still have joy and love to offer.
Nicole now focuses on finding Moose a permanent home where he can live his remaining years with patience, care, and stability. With his gentle demeanor and lively spirit, Moose deserves the happy ending he has long awaited.
