Dog Spends 3 Years In Florida Shelter Afraid Of People, Then Locks Eyes With A Special Person

Getting to know a dog isn’t a picnic. It takes time to learn their likes, dislikes, fears, triggers, behavior, and everything that comes with it.

That’s why shelter dogs, especially those with past trauma, are often misunderstood and overlooked by potential adopters. They are frequently mistaken for aggressive or ‘broken,’ when, in fact, they are sweet companions in disguise. They just need time and patience.

Sabie was definitely that kind of dog!

After spending three long years at a Florida shelter, he started to lose hope of ever finding a suitable home just because of his fear of strangers.

Then, one man walked in and changed his entire life!

From Fear Of Strangers To Love At First Sight

When Sabie arrived at Patty Baker Humane Society in Florida, from another shelter, he was a total mystery. The staff didn’t know much about his past, except that he struggled with an extreme fear of strangers.

“Sadly, we don’t know much about his past, but what we do know is that he struggles with trust. Sabie has stranger danger—he’s not broken, he’s just scared of new people,” Florida shelter wrote on Facebook.

Due to his behavior and seemingly ‘aggressive’ attitude toward people, he’s been overlooked for years.

Fortunately, one man recognized his qualities!

Gary was still mourning the loss of his dog when he arrived at the shelter and locked eyes with Sabie. Unlike with other people, this time, Sabie didn’t bark, growl, or retreat to the corner of his kennel. He simply stared at Gary, giving him a kind look.

Even though Gary didn’t know it at the time, the volunteers explained to him that Sabie’s reaction was completely unexpected.

“After talking with our Animal Care team and hearing Sabie’s story, Gary felt a pull—like maybe he could be the one to show Sabie what friendship feels like,” PBHSN added.

Then, Gary surprised everyone. Instead of just letting go, he decided to try and be Sabie’s friend. Over the following months, he visited the shelter twice a week to take him out on walks.

In the beginning, he did it with two volunteers holding Sabie with a muzzle and Gary at a proper distance. At the same time, two played fetch, with Gary being behind a fence so he wouldn’t trigger Sabie’s fear.

Eventually, the two became so close that Sabie didn’t need a muzzle anymore.

He completely gave in and began to trust Gary, who became his best friend and taught him what human love felt like. And, just seeing Sabie come out of his shell was truly rewarding.

Still Waiting For The Perfect Home

Thanks to Gary, Sabie made his first step toward his new beginning. He’s learned that he’s capable of making friends – all he needs is time, proper guidance, and someone kind to give him a chance.

“Though Gary isn’t adopting Sabie, he’s given him something priceless: hope. Hope that there are people out there who will take the time to understand him,” the rescue concluded.

One thing is for sure: there’s no doubt Sabie will fully overcome his fears next to the right family. I truly hope someone gives him a chance soon!
