The sad reality is that so many senior dogs spend their golden years staring out from behind kennel doors, never getting the fresh start they deserve. Puppies are scooped up fast, while older dogs get passed over again and again, even though they’re just as loving and sweet.
Deja, an older dog living in a Florida shelter, is one of those overlooked hearts.
For almost three years, she’s watched people come through with those hopeful, bright eyes, only to see families walk right past her kennel without pausing.
Even with how affectionate she is, Deja is still there, while her caregivers keep doing everything they can to make sure someone finally notices her.
Deja’s Long Wait For A Chance
The staff at Patty Baker Humane Society Naples (PBHSN) in Florida have watched Deja wait year after year. Each day, she peers through her kennel doors, hoping the next set of footsteps will be the ones that finally pause for her.
Even in her senior years, this gentle girl has never lost her spark. Deja is known for her affection and her adorable “bunny-like zoomies.”
“Deja is a playful, affectionate girl who will keep you smiling—especially when she breaks into her signature bunny-like zoomies,” PBHSN shared on Facebook.
Though she has entered her golden years, her caregivers emphasize that she is still lively and full of love. She thrives on human connection and delights in meeting new friends.
“Despite being overlooked for nearly three years, Deja remains full of love and joy, always eager to meet new human friends,” the rescue added.
The staff continues to share updates, including the recent viral video on Facebook where Deja’s daily kennel routine is shown.
Sadly, even after millions of views, Deja is still waiting for a home.
In the meantime, her caregivers do everything they can to present her story in the best way possible. She is a dog who longs for companionship and is far more than just her kennel run.
Deja craves connection, enjoys walks, pup cups, yard play, and daily adventures. Her only limitation is that she does not get along with other dogs.
“She is not comfortable around other dogs and would do best as the only dog in the home. A calm, patient environment where she can enjoy her golden years at her own pace would be the perfect fit,” the Florida shelter wrote.
Still Waiting
It is clear that Deja’s greatest wish is to find a loving home where she can spend her golden years. In the meantime, the PBHSN team reassures her supporters that she is safe and cherished.
“We’ve made sure to tell her that thousands of people are rooting for her to find a forever home. In the meantime, please know that Deja is safe, loved, and well cared for while we continue searching for the right match,” the rescue shared in another post.
Her life at the shelter includes playtime and affection from staff who adore her, but she knows the difference between a kennel and a home.
For now, Deja waits patiently, hoping that one day a family will see her not as another shelter dog, but as the heart of their home.
