He was standing out in the street like he had nothing left to give.
Pain had taken over almost everything. His back legs trembled under him, barely doing their job, and every small effort to move seemed to drain what little strength he still had. He looked worn down, aching, and completely alone. The sadness in his eyes said the rest.
It felt like the kind of moment where hope had already packed up and left.
Then a Missouri rescue team from Stray Rescue of St. Louis happened to drive by and spot him.
One look told them this dog was in serious trouble. He was painfully thin, curled in on himself, and carrying his body in that unmistakable way animals do when they are hurting badly. He did not need a long examination to make his condition clear.
Later, they gave him the name Guillermo de la Cruz.
Before that, he was just a suffering pup staring up at them with desperate, searching eyes, as if he already knew these were the people who might save him.
Safe At Last

Without hesitation, the rescuers stopped their car and hurried toward him.
Although Guillermo de la Cruz was visibly frightened, his injuries made it impossible for him to run.
Rescuer Donna Lochmann approached slowly, speaking softly to comfort him before gently looping a leash around his neck.

As they carried him to the vehicle, the pup trembled with uncertainty. But once he was safely placed inside, his body began to relax as if he finally understood that the worst was over.
“[A]s soon as he realized he was safe in the car, he relaxed. You are safe, you big, sweet angel,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared in a Facebook post.

He was taken straight to the organization’s facility, where staff members welcomed him with warmth and care.
Veterinarians examined him and provided the treatment he needed, along with plenty of nutritious food to help him regain his strength.
Thanks to the team’s dedication and kindness, Guillermo de la Cruz slowly recovered, eventually transforming into a healthy, happy dog.
His striking looks and sweet expression soon captured everyone’s attention.
“Guillermo de la Cruz is a show-stopper wherever he goes! This choco chonk of a baby doll boy has permanent puppy eyes and a record-breaking-sized noggin,” the rescue proudly posted on Facebook.
A Bright New Beginning

Guillermo de la Cruz’s recovery went far beyond the physical. With love and patience, his confidence returned, and his gentle personality began to shine.
When the time came to look for a forever home, it didn’t take long for the perfect match to appear.

After spending a happy time with his foster family, Guillermo de la Cruz met the people who would become his permanent family, ready to give him all the affection he had missed.
Now lovingly called Archie, he has started the happiest chapter of his life, surrounded by warmth, care, and security.

“He now has two fur brothers (Jax [and] Flex), a fur sister (Lucy), and a mom and dad who are totally nuts about him,” the Missouri rescue announced in a Facebook update.
Enjoy every moment of your beautiful new life, Guillermo de la Cruz — you’ve truly earned it.
