When a Good Samaritan spotted a frightened dog hiding behind a dumpster in a St. Louis alley, they quickly reached out to Stray Rescue of St. Louis for help. Donna Lochmann and her team responded immediately to the call.
Upon arriving at the scene, they found the dog, later named Joan of Bark, doing her best to avoid attention.
She remained still, as if she had already given up hope. However, when Lochmann spoke gently, Joan of Bark lifted her head. Her eyes revealed a deep sadness mixed with intense fear.
Gaining The Trust Of A Fearful Pup

Lochmann sat down near Joan of Bark and offered her Vienna sausages. Although still uneasy, the hungry dog eagerly ate the treat. After a few moments of allowing Joan to settle, Lochmann carefully placed a leash around her neck.
Joan hesitated, staying motionless for a while, but Lochmann patiently waited for her to feel ready.
When Joan eventually stood up, the reason for her fear became clear. One of her back legs appeared to be broken, and it seemed likely she had been struck by a car.

The team carefully guided Joan into a crate, speaking to her in calm voices to reassure her that she was safe.
“She’s fearful and painful, but who wouldn’t be in her position. It’s okay, baby, you are safe now! We got you,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared in a Facebook post.
At the veterinary clinic, Joan was thoroughly examined, and X-rays were taken of her injured leg.
The staff also gave her a warm bath, which she accepted with a sense of gratitude in her eyes, showing her appreciation for the gentle care.
Despite the team’s efforts to save the leg, the injury had gone untreated for too long.

Sadly, amputation was the only solution to relieve her pain. The surgery was successful, and Joan of Bark’s recovery began.
Once stable, she returned to the shelter, pain-free and eager for affection. The staff showered her with love and reassurance, helping her realize that kindness and comfort were possible.
A Journey To Healing And A Bright Future

Now full of energy and confidence, Joan of Bark raced across the yard, her tail wagging high and her eyes filled with joy. Though life with three legs didn’t slow her down, she continued to embrace the love that surrounded her.
The St. Louis rescue team placed Joan with a foster family, where she started off timid and unsure. However, it didn’t take long for her to relax and settle into the safety of a real home.

Her fosters provided her with patience, routine, and gentle care, which helped her trust again. Joan of Bark also bonded with her canine foster sister, sharing moments of napping and playing as they both grew stronger together.

Joan of Bark is still in search of her forever home.
While her perfect match hasn’t been found yet, her loving nature and courageous spirit suggest it won’t be long before she finds the family she deserves.
