Being part of an animal rescue team means preparing for the unexpected. Urgent calls can come at any time, and you never know what you might face.
That was exactly the case for Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL). As a storm approached, Donna Lochmann and her crew rushed out to check on dogs before the weather turned. What they stumbled upon left them heartbroken.
While driving through a neighborhood park, volunteers noticed a small figure hiding near a set of picnic benches. As they got closer, their worst fears were confirmed.
A Scared Pup In The Park

A tiny puppy peeked nervously from behind the tables. When the team approached, they discovered he had been tied to a picnic table and abandoned.
It was impossible to know how long he had been there without food or water, but his fragile state showed he had been suffering for quite some time.
Frightened and confused, the little dog trembled, carrying the weight of betrayal after being deserted by the people he trusted.

Adding to his misery, his fur was badly affected by ringworm.
“It rained on and off this week, some thunderstorms mixed in, here in St. Louis. This little puppy was tied up and left at a park, and he’s COVERED in ringworm,” the rescue shared in a Facebook post.
At first, he wanted nothing to do with people. He barked anxiously, pouring his fear into every sound, as if trying to protect himself from those who wanted to help.

But with patience, soft voices, and a few treats, his walls began to crumble. The rescuers slipped a leash around his neck and carefully led him to safety.
“He was so brave when we first approached, but then as soon as we got in the Jeep he curled up on Donna’s lap and let out a deep sigh – that sigh said so much,” SRSL explained.
It didn’t take long for the puppy to realize he was finally safe. Almost instantly, he turned into a cuddlebug, resting peacefully in the arms of his rescuer.
A Fresh Beginning

Other than the ringworm, the pup was in decent health. Once back at SRSL, staff began his treatment with soothing medicated baths.
“He’ll get medicated baths and will be ready for foster in just a few short days. He’ll never have to be lonely or muster up that much bravery ever again,” the rescue promised.
Now named Wilbur, the little pup is adjusting well and showing signs of happiness with every passing day.
Once his treatment is complete, Wilbur will move into a foster home, where he’ll get all the love and attention he deserves. Soon after, rescuers hope to find him a forever family to give him the life he was always meant to have.
