Being an animal rescuer means staying on alert for the utterly unpredictable. You never know when the next urgent call will unfold.
That proved true for Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL). One day, as a storm loomed, Donna Lochmann and her team hurried out to help dogs before the downpour, and stumbled upon a heartbreaking surprise.
While patrolling a neighborhood park, volunteers noticed a tiny figure peering out from behind a set of picnic benches. As they drew closer, their hearts sank.
Peeking Behind The Benches

A teeny pup watched them timidly from behind the tables. When the team approached, they discovered he’d been tied to a picnic table, likely abandoned.
No one knows how long he’d gone without food or water, but his condition made it clear he’d been suffering.
Terrified and shaken by what was probably the worst moment of his young life, he cowered. Being deserted by the people you trust cuts deep, and this little dog felt every bit of it.

To make matters worse, his coat was riddled with ringworm.
“It rained on and off this week, some thunderstorms mixed in, here in St. Louis. This little puppy was tied up and left at a park, and he’s COVERED in ringworm,” the rescue wrote in a Facebook post.
At first, he kept his distance, barking frantically out of fear and pouring his panic into every sound, hoping to ward off his would-be helpers.

Fortunately, a few soothing words and treats worked wonders. The team slipped a leash over his neck and gently guided him to the car, where his new chapter began.
“He was so brave when we first approached, but then as soon as we got in the Jeep he curled up on Donna’s lap and let out a deep sigh – that sigh said so much” SRSL added.
Within moments, he melted into a cuddlebug. Realizing he was finally safe, gratitude washed over him.
Off To A New Start

Aside from the ringworm, there were no major health issues. Once at SRSL headquarters, the pup, now named Wilbur, was prescribed medicated baths.
“He’ll get medicated baths and will be ready for foster in just a few short days. He’ll never have to be lonely or muster up that much bravery ever again,” the rescue said.
Relieved to be out of the rain-soaked park, Wilbur still needed a bit of time to settle in, but his happiness was obvious.
When he’s ready, Wilbur will move into a foster home, with hopes of finding the perfect forever family soon after.
