While pulling into a coffee drive-thru in San Bernardino, California, Jaina and Ivy Spagis were simply hoping to grab a treat.
But as they neared the window, a large gray and white dog suddenly darted in front of their car. Her tail was tucked tightly, her posture tense, clearly frightened and unsure.
The couple quickly noticed something odd. Hanging from the dog’s neck was an unexpected item.
It appeared to be a pair of pants loosely tied around her neck.
Terrified Pup Begins To Trust

Jaina and Ivy, founders of Cats of San Bernardino, were familiar with helping animals in need.
They didn’t hesitate. As they slowly approached the distressed dog, they were struck by the sorrow in her eyes.
The dog, later named Bette Davis, seemed to be scanning the area, searching for someone she recognized. She looked lost and uncertain.
As the couple moved closer, Bette hesitated. Her tail remained tucked, and she backed away slightly, caught between fear and a longing for comfort. Her body language revealed her inner turmoil.
Jaina and Ivy spoke gently, offering soothing words to calm her.
Eventually, they got close enough. Bette sensed their kindness and allowed them near.
When Jaina knelt and reached out, Bette responded by licking her hand.

Feeling safe, Bette rolled onto her back, a vulnerable gesture asking for affection and reassurance.
She soaked up the love, clearly craving the warmth and care they offered.
A New Beginning Takes Shape

Jaina and Ivy softly stroked Bette’s head and led her to a safer spot, where they treated her to a whipped cream cup.
While she enjoyed the sweet snack, they removed the item from her neck and discovered it was actually a sweatshirt, not pants.
After finishing her Puppuccino, Bette willingly jumped into their car.
They took her to the vet for an examination. A microchip scan revealed some details about her past.
Hoping she had a family waiting, they called the number linked to her chip, optimistic about a reunion.
But the news was heartbreaking.
“We were able to contact the owner today and found out that he moved away and couldn’t take her. We asked if he wanted her back, and he said, ‘No,’” Cats of San Bernardino wrote on Instagram.
Looking into Bette’s soft blue eyes, filled with hope and gratitude, they knew they couldn’t walk away.
Searching For A Home That Will Last

Jaina and Ivy promised Bette they would find her a home where she’d never feel abandoned again.
Their rescue facility was designed for cats, so they couldn’t keep her immediately. Instead, they arranged a foster placement, where Bette received loving care for the next week.
During that time, the couple prepared a space at their facility to welcome her more permanently.
When Bette saw them again, she lit up. Her eyes sparkled, and her tail wagged freely.

Though she hasn’t yet found her forever home, this sweet California girl has drawn plenty of interest.
Her rescuers believe it’s only a matter of time before someone recognizes her worth and gives her the love she deserves.
Bette Davis is ready to begin a new chapter with someone who will never leave her behind.
