Some stories linger in the heart forever, and Halia’s is one of those that will never be forgotten.
This gentle girl had been left alone for days, quietly hoping that someone would notice her. She stayed in silence, clinging to the smallest thread of hope that a caring hand might reach out and offer comfort.
When a compassionate passerby finally discovered her, Halia was at her most fragile. She lay in a mixture of water and garbage, her emaciated body unable to move on its own. All she needed was tenderness, patience, and the warmth of human care.
Within hours, she was given exactly what she had been waiting for.
A Tough Rescue

Donna Lochmann, Chief Life-Saving Officer of Stray Rescue of St. Louis, received the urgent call about Halia and immediately sprang into action.
Throughout her years in animal rescue, Donna had seen many difficult cases, but Halia’s condition was particularly heart-wrenching. Lying helpless in the trash, unable to stand, she appeared to have surrendered to her circumstances.
Her back legs were entirely paralyzed, leaving her only able to move her head.

The team suspected she had likely been struck by a car and dragged herself into nearby bushes to avoid further danger. There, she remained, starving and defenseless, until rescuers finally reached her.
Donna and her colleagues approached cautiously, aware that Halia was traumatized and wary. They took care to earn her trust before making any physical contact.
Once she felt secure, Donna gently wrapped her in a blanket and lifted her into the rescue vehicle, beginning the first step of a new chapter in her life.
Experiencing Care And Love

At the rescue facility, the team carefully dried Halia and surrounded her with warm blankets. She shivered from cold and exhaustion, so ensuring her comfort became their immediate priority.
Having gone so long without food, the staff offered only a small portion at first to prevent refeeding complications.
It was during this time that the team gave her a name. She was called Halia, honoring Harris, a beloved dog they had lost in the past. Her new name reflected remembrance, resilience, and the promise of a fresh start.

Veterinarians performed a complete examination, including X-rays to determine the cause of her paralysis. Despite her wounds and frailty, nothing clearly explained why her back legs were immobile.
Even with this uncertainty, the following morning offered a glimpse of hope. Halia lifted her head and even managed a faint, gentle smile. For the first time since her rescue, she appeared to feel a spark of joy.

The team took her outside to enjoy sunlight, placing her in a wagon and gently pulling her so she could feel the warmth on her face.
In that moment, Halia seemed to experience pure happiness.
A Heartbreaking End
Despite the care and love she received, Halia’s delicate body was too weak to recover fully. By the third day, her strength faded completely. She could no longer eat or lift her head, and her condition deteriorated rapidly.
That day, she passed away.
The rescuers were heartbroken but also profoundly grateful they could offer her love and comfort in her final hours.
The Stray Rescue team surrounded her with tender words as she left this world: “We are so sorry. You are so beautiful. We love you,” they shared.
Though her time was brief, Halia’s final moments were filled with kindness and compassion. She crossed the rainbow bridge surrounded by people who truly cared.
Her story is a poignant reminder of the cruelty some animals face, as well as the transformative power of love in their last days. Halia’s memory will endure forever.
