While driving along a quiet stretch near Noble, Oklahoma, Alysse Matlock noticed something fluffy moving along the center line of the road.
As she slowed down, she realized it was a miniature Australian Shepherd wandering alone.
Concerned for the dog’s safety, Alysse pulled over and gently tried to coax her into the car. Instead, the frightened pup took off running.
Before losing sight of her, Alysse snapped a quick photo and later shared it on Facebook, hoping someone nearby might recognize the dog.
Responses came quickly. Several people said they had seen the same pup roaming the area.
A Community Joins The Search

After the photo circulated, residents of Noble began reporting sightings. No one knew where the dog had come from or how long she had been on her own.
A few days later, the dog, now nicknamed Journey, appeared again in downtown Noble, nearly ten miles from where Alysse first saw her.
With nighttime temperatures dropping, worry for her safety grew. One observer pointed out that Journey’s belly looked swollen, raising concerns that she might be pregnant and close to giving birth.
Determined to help, Alysse went back out looking for her. She spent nearly three hours trying to gain Journey’s trust. By 1 a.m., exhausted and unsuccessful, she finally went home with plans to return the next day.

Shelter Found Just In Time
The following day, Alysse returned to the area and noticed movement behind a pile of discarded debris. When she looked closer, she spotted Journey tucked away in a makeshift shelter.

“She’d spent the night curled up in a busted recliner by the side of the highway,” Alysse wrote in a video.
Once again, Alysse tried to coax the dog into her car, but Journey remained cautious and kept her distance.
Then help arrived. Alysse and a few Good Samaritans spotted Journey on a nearby hill and quickly worked out a plan.
With patience, teamwork, and a few hotdogs, they were finally able to secure the wary pup and lift her safely into the vehicle.
“It was such a relief when she was finally caught. All of us strangers that had stopped on the side of the road that morning started hugging,” Alysse told The Dodo.

A Surprise By Morning
Safe at last, Journey was taken to the veterinarian, who confirmed she was pregnant and likely due within five to seven days.
The next morning brought an unexpected turn. Alysse woke up to the sound of tiny squeaks. Journey had already delivered two puppies overnight, and four more soon followed.
In less than a day, the once skittish stray had become a devoted mother to six healthy pups.

A Calm Place To Heal And Grow
Now settled into a warm and quiet home, Journey and her puppies were finally able to rest. The calm environment gave her the chance to recover while caring for her newborn litter.
For now, the family will remain under close supervision. If no owner comes forward, Journey and her puppies will eventually be placed for adoption through Noble Now Inc. Friends of Noble Animal Shelter.
Thanks to persistence, compassion, and a community that refused to give up, one determined Australian Shepherd found safety just in time to welcome her babies into the world.
