Oregon Rescuer Walks Into The Woods And Finds A Lonely Soul Waiting On A Mattress

When rescuer Brenda learned about a terrified dog sleeping on an abandoned mattress deep in the Oregon woods, she knew she had to step in.

The pup seemed hesitant and wary, so Brenda spoke softly, adding a playful tone to ease his nerves.

The dog, later named Hondo, appeared to sense her good intentions. Slowly, he followed her and climbed willingly into her truck, trusting her enough to leave the woods behind.

Urgent Care And Healing

Hondo’s condition was deeply concerning. Without delay, Brenda drove him straight to a local Oregon shelter.

“He definitely looked like he was in a lot of pain. His skin was obviously painful. He was completely bald,” said Brenda.

Once there, he began to relax, soothed by Brenda’s calm presence and gentle words.

Veterinarians discovered he was suffering from a severe case of mange and immediately started treatment.

As his body healed, Hondo’s true personality emerged. Beneath the years of neglect was a playful, affectionate dog ready to share his love.

Learning To Trust Again

For over a month, Hondo waited at the shelter with no adopters stepping forward.Determined to give him a real chance, the staff contacted the South Coast Humane Society (SCHS) in Oregon.

The team arranged a foster home for him the very next day.

His foster mom, Sarah, and her son, Seth, welcomed Hondo with open arms.

“I felt horrible when I saw Hondo and the condition he was in because you don’t look like that overnight. That’s years of neglect,” said Sarah.

Seth quickly formed a bond with him, and under their care, Hondo began to thrive.

Twice-weekly baths treated his mange, while endless playtime and cuddles helped him recover emotionally.

Despite years of isolation, he warmed to everyone he met, revealing a gentle, loving spirit.

Finding His Forever Home

Sarah observed that Hondo would do best in a home without other dogs, or only with calm, submissive companions.

He didn’t need strenuous exercise, just quiet outdoor time with someone to keep him active at his own pace.

Soon, the ideal family appeared. They recognized Hondo’s gentle nature and knew immediately that he belonged with them.

Today, the dog who once curled up alone on a filthy mattress in the woods enjoys a life filled with comfort, warmth, and the love he always deserved.
