Sometimes it feels impossible to believe that magic isn’t real. That’s especially true when tiny puppies suddenly show up after you thought you had already saved them all.
In this story, rescuer Donna Lochmann had the rare chance to witness what looked like the sweetest little magic trick.
A Surprise Waiting In The Basement
When Donna Lochmann, chief lifesaving officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, received a call about a dog abandoned in a basement, she rushed to the scene.
At first, she expected to find just one dog left behind in the empty house. But as soon as she stepped out of her car, she heard the sound of puppies crying. She could hardly believe it until her own eyes confirmed what her ears told her.
Using the cries to guide her, she made her way into the basement and discovered three frightened, but adorable, puppies no older than six weeks.
Carefully carrying the pups to her car so she could take them somewhere safe, Lochmann suddenly heard barking from another part of the house. She assumed it had to be the mama. Not wanting to separate her from her babies, she set up a humane trap to catch her.
But the nervous mother got scared of the trap and ran off.
We never want to leave Mom behind. So, I went back a few more times hoping that she would still be in that area, said Lochmann.
Looking For The Missing Mama
The first two times she returned, there was no sign of the dog. On her third visit, though, Lochmann finally heard familiar barking coming from inside. This time, luck was on her side.
As she climbed the stairs inside the house, she suddenly heard a small bark behind her. Turning around, she was shocked to see a fourth puppy staring back at her, as if to ask why he had been forgotten.
Lochmann was stunned. She had checked the basement carefully before and was sure she had already rescued every puppy.
She investigated further and discovered a large hole in the floorboards above the basement. The missing puppies had been falling through it.
When she reached the first floor, she found four more little ones waiting. In total, there were now eight puppies.
After carrying the new group to her car, she went back again, determined not to leave the mother this time. Setting the trap inside the house worked perfectly. With her guard down, the mama was finally secured.
A New Beginning For The Whole Family
The mother, now named Windy Day, was joyfully reunited with her puppies. Together, they were brought to the shelter for the care they desperately needed.
The first three pups Lochmann discovered went into foster care with her, while the others soon found forever homes of their own.
Windy Day is still waiting for the perfect family who will give her the love and devotion she deserves.
Final Word
Since only about 27% of bigger dogs find adoption through foster care, everyone has their fingers crossed that Windy Day will be one of the lucky ones.
