A Distress Call
When the California-based team at Hope For Paws received a message about a lone pup hiding beneath a car, they rushed to the location.
Several hours later, they found her in the very same spot, curled up tightly. Approaching carefully so as not to scare her, the rescuers moved slowly and gently.
One rescuer recalled that he had once saved another dog in that very area, a reminder that strays often ended up there seeking safety.
They laid down some food, which the hungry pup eagerly devoured.
Despite her fear, her empty stomach left her no choice but to accept the offering. This gave the rescuers a chance to try slipping on a leash—but she slipped away almost instantly.
Undeterred, they tried again with food. For a while, it seemed like their efforts would go nowhere. But gradually, they noticed something shift. She began wagging her tail, almost as if the whole ordeal had turned into a playful game.
Though nervous, she was starting to enjoy the interaction, making the team laugh at her spirited resilience.
Finding Her Courage
Another rescuer, Annabelle, soon arrived and helped block off the area around the car. With the space secure, the pup grew bolder and finally stepped out toward them.
They resisted the urge to grab her quickly, careful not to scare her into biting. Instead, Annabelle tried her luck with a leash—and to everyone’s surprise, it worked on the very first attempt.
