This is the story of Habanero, one of those frightened strays who had almost given up on ever being loved.

Searching Through The Ruins
When Stray Rescue of St. Louis, in St. Louis, Missouri, received a call about a dog hiding in a rundown, abandoned apartment building, Donna Lochmann, the shelter’s chief life saving officer, quickly gathered her team and headed over.
When they reached the crumbling property, they searched every corner, but the dog was nowhere to be found.
After carefully checking all floors and making sure no one remained inside, they had to return to the shelter empty-handed.
As the days grew colder, more calls kept coming in about a stray still being seen near that same building.
Determined to try again, Lochmann went back to the site.
“When I got to the backside of the building, I saw a dog lying in the grass. I saw her run towards the back of the building and she went in, so I followed her.”
Once she slipped into the building, the dog disappeared from sight.
Knowing there were too many units to check alone, Lochmann returned to the shelter and asked her colleagues to join the search.
The next day, she and the team came back together and resumed looking for the elusive pup.
Frozen In Terror
Back at the scene, the group suddenly heard noise. Barking echoed from one of the apartments.
“I got over there and there was a poor dog just lying in the rubble of this building. She was absolutely trembling, her legs were shaking so hard,” said Lochmann.
As she inched closer, the terrified pup began shaking even harder. The sight left Lochmann heartbroken.
It had been a long time since she had witnessed a dog tremble that badly. Speaking softly, she offered food to reassure her. The frightened pup looked back with eyes that held a spark of hope.
The rescuers decided to name her Habanero.
Lochmann avoided using a leash, worried it might make Habanero panic more. Instead, she and her team carefully guided the dog into a plastic crate with their hands.
Once inside, Habanero seemed to feel safer. Lochmann gently carried the crate to the car.
At the shelter, she was given a full medical exam.
Physically, she was healthy, but emotionally she remained unsettled. She continued to growl and shake whenever people came too close.
The Comfort Of Love
After a few days of care, Habanero started to settle in. The trembling stopped, and she began leaning into affection. Her caretakers showered her with cuddles, and she returned their love with kisses.
Daily walks helped her adapt quickly to life in St. Louis, Missouri.
It soon became clear that Habanero was ready to move forward into foster care.
Not long after, a kind family stepped up to foster her. Moving into their home, she finally experienced warmth and comfort.
The constant love and attention allowed her to blossom. Habanero embraced every moment of her new life, filling each day with joy. She had at last found the affection she had always missed. Never again would she face loneliness and abandonment.
