Animal rescues unfold in many different ways. Some dogs accept help without resistance, others require gentle persuasion, and certain missions test every ounce of determination.
This particular rescue fell into the most demanding category.
A Mother And Puppies Concealed In The Shadows
Donna Lochmann, chief life-saving officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Missouri noticed a mother dog and her litter hiding inside a crawlspace, visible through an open window. She and her team knew immediate action was required.
The mother and two of her puppies were caught quickly, but the rest of the litter resisted.
The remaining pups darted deeper into the crawlspace, forcing Donna to flatten herself against the ground and crawl into the dark, dusty space.
“There was not enough room to even be on hands and knees, she had to army crawl under there, and it went so far back. The puppies knew the space well, but we didn’t!” the St. Louis rescue wrote on Facebook.
Donna pressed forward until she finally reached the frightened little ones, four more puppies huddled at the very back. Now came the challenge of bringing them out safely.
One By One
Donna understood there was no shortcut. The only solution was to crawl back and forth, carrying each puppy separately. She stretched forward to secure one pup, wriggled back through the narrow crawlspace to the opening, passed the little one into waiting hands, and immediately turned herself around to crawl back into the darkness for another.
After several exhausting trips through the tight crawlspace, Donna finally emerged with all six puppies safe, reunited with their mother.
“We are pleased to tell you that we are very dirty, but we have 6 perfect, chubby babies and one wonderful mama all safe and sound!” the team happily shared.
The family was then taken to the vet for a thorough checkup.
Dedication That Saves Lives
This mission demonstrates the extraordinary lengths rescuers are willing to go when animals are in need. It requires not only compassion and skill, but also persistence, grit, and patience to succeed.
Donna once again showed why she is considered a hero, crawling through dust and darkness to ensure six tiny lives had the chance to grow up safe and loved.
