New York Rescue Dog Overcomes Abuse And Disability, But Her Biggest Challenge Remains

Cola’s journey has been anything but easy.

Unlike most dogs, this resilient two-legged girl endured years of hardship. Her previous owners subjected her to abuse and neglect, robbing her of the chance to know what love truly feels like.

Then, something extraordinary happened.

Rescuers in New York stepped in to give Cola the care and affection she had always been denied. In return, she responded with boundless sweetness and a spirit that amazed everyone around her.

This is her story.

Cola’s Past Is Heartbreaking

Before she found her way to Twenty Paws Rescue in New York, Cola had been saved by Kannan Animal Welfare along with her brother, who sadly didn’t survive.

She faced numerous challenges, including the loss of both her hind legs.

Cola remained in KAW’s care for years, hoping for a fresh start. When that didn’t materialize, Twenty Paws Rescue stepped in to offer her a second chance.

“Our little amputee has battled a lot of obstacles because of her extreme abuse. She’s a fighter and on a road to a much better life! She’s a gorgeous, smart 2-legged girl with so much love to give,” this New York City rescue wrote in a Facebook post.

During her first few months, Cola was timid and withdrawn. Her past had left her fearful of interaction, but slowly, she began to open up.

Thanks to a compassionate team that worked tirelessly to help her feel safe, Cola started revealing her joyful nature.

In just a few weeks, she bonded with her caregivers and fellow animals.

What truly stunned everyone was how easily she adapted to her new environment. Despite having only two legs, Cola became one of the most energetic and playful dogs in foster care.

Thriving Against All Odds

Cola can do it all.

She runs, climbs stairs, and plays with other dogs just like any other pup. Her body adjusted to her new reality, and she now embraces each day with enthusiasm.

“She does not need to be expressed, can handle stairs, runs around… she’s perfect,” TPR wrote.

Still, her high energy comes with a price. Cola began experiencing chronic discomfort, prompting her caregivers to try a wheelchair. Unfortunately, it didn’t provide the relief they hoped for.

Veterinarians discovered that Cola’s spine has unusual fusions that prevent her from using the wheelchair.

“She has wheels but cannot use them due to a fusion. She’s in rehab to help keep her front joints strong and we’re still exploring other mobility devices,” the rescue added.

Now, her team is working on a custom 3D-printed wheelchair tailored to her needs. With help from their partners, TPR is committed to giving Cola the best mobility solution possible.

But the biggest hurdle remains: Cola still hasn’t found her forever home. She’s currently in foster care in Connecticut, waiting for a family who will give her the love and stability she’s never known.

Everyone hopes that day arrives soon.

Wishing you the best, Cola.
