One moment, you’re about to face the end. The next, you’re in the spotlight, basking in the cheers of the crowd.
This is exactly how Max, a senior rescue dog, could describe his incredible journey.
On the brink of being euthanized, Max never imagined he would be saved, let alone become a beloved star in his community’s theatre. But in a twist of fate, Max not only found a new lease on life, but he was given an opportunity he could never have dreamed of.
Here’s how his extraordinary story unfolded.
A Senior Yorkie Jack Russell With A Stage Career Ahead

Only days separated Max from being put down. He believed his time had run out, and to be honest, most of his life had not been filled with happiness.
At 12 years old, this Yorkie Jack Russell mix had spent too long in a shelter, passed over by potential adopters, left to wonder if he’d ever get a second chance.
Max never expected that people like Lauren and Foster would change his fate.
Max’s journey began with Foster’s father and stepmother, who adopted him from a Colorado shelter.
However, Max proved to be too much for his stepmother, who had only owned Shih Tzus before. His larger-than-life personality didn’t quite fit their home, so Max was passed on to Lauren and Foster, who moved with him to Virginia.
For the first time, Max found himself with people who truly understood him. But this was only the start of his incredible journey. Max had no idea what destiny had in store for him.
During a walk with Lauren, Max caught the eye of Katy Brown, the producing artistic director of Barter Theatre in Abingdon. Katy, a talent scout, immediately saw that Max was a perfect star waiting to shine.
Barter Theatre, a historic venue with over 90 years of history, was staging a production of The Wizard of Oz. When Katy saw Max, she knew instantly that he was the ideal Toto.
Max’s life was about to change once again, this time placing him in the spotlight and setting him on a path to success.
Is He Max Or Toto?

The theatre team quickly fell in love with Max. At 12 years old, this little rescue dog charmed everyone. Max had a natural desire to please people and was even able to perform tricks on cue.
To the cast and crew, it was clear that Max was the perfect Toto.
Preparations for his debut began, and Max was soon ready for the stage. The production scheduled 56 performances with Max in the role.
Life suddenly became very busy for Max, but he thrived. His secret to success? Treats.
“He’s a people pleaser, and the treats definitely don’t hurt either,” said Smith for Newsweek.“It’s really funny because I’ve been to a few shows, and he’ll look out into the audience and check it out. It doesn’t phase him, and he loves the other actors on stage with him.”
The new production of The Wizard of Oz received praise from critics. Audiences came from near and far to see Max, calling him the perfect canine star. Everyone agreed that Max was born to play the role.
Discovered late in life, Max still has a bright future ahead of him. Next destination? Hollywood.
