The staff at Hope for Life Rescue in Virginia were grateful they intervened at just the right time to assist Love Bug and her pups.
This anxious mother had just given birth to an unprecedented fourteen puppies.
At first, she was extremely protective, refusing to allow anyone near her babies and keeping them shielded from every hand that tried to help.
Even with such an immense litter, Love Bug devoted herself to each pup individually. The rescue team knew, however, that supporting her was essential to ensure all fourteen remained healthy and thrived.
They spent multiple days earning her confidence, working patiently to gain her trust. Gradually, Love Bug began to allow gentle assistance.
“Momma is starting to trust us and has been letting us weigh her puppies daily to ensure that they are all getting adequate nutrition,” the Virginia rescue wrote in a Facebook post.
Eventually, she permitted volunteers to help feed the pups, marking a significant milestone in their recovery and adjustment.
“Love Bug still isn’t sure what to make of people, but she happily accepts any help when it comes to her babies. 14 is A LOT,” the rescue added in another post.
By the end of the month, Love Bug enjoyed attention from volunteers reading to her, receiving homemade meals, and being showered with affection. Alongside being an attentive mother, she grew into a beloved personality at the shelter.
