This is the story of Deputy, a homeless pup who wandered the streets searching for kindness until his paws finally led him to the Off The Grid Animal Sanctuary in Texas. Though frightened and sorrowful, he bravely stepped through the gates, hoping someone would notice him.
A New Arrival At The Gate
As soon as Deputy appeared, the sanctuary’s resident dogs began barking in unison. Their noise drew the attention of Bionca Smith, the founder of the sanctuary, who peeked out the window. To her surprise, a large, unfamiliar dog was standing by the gate, quietly waiting for help.
Smith quickly went outside to greet him. What struck her most was the sorrow etched on his face. His size made her a bit wary at first, unsure how he might react.
“I could tell he was looking for help, but his face was a little intimidating to me for a brief moment. I could’ve been afraid he’d bite me. He could’ve been afraid I’d hurt him, but because of the connection that comes with being at the right place at the right time … when you know, you know,” Smith wrote on Instagram.
Despite her initial hesitation, Smith’s instincts told her she could trust this dog. She spoke to him softly, coaxing him closer. The pup, later named Deputy, felt her sincerity. With his tail wagging, he walked toward her.
Then came the moment that melted her heart—Deputy gently reached out his paw, asking for help. Smith took it into her hand, stroking it gently, touched by his trust. In that instant, she knew he had chosen the right place to seek refuge.
Deputy’s First Friends
Deputy’s tender gesture and sorrowful eyes won Smith over completely. She welcomed him warmly and showed him around the sanctuary grounds.
Because he was a stray, Deputy first had to undergo quarantine before joining the other dogs. But there was one special pup who just couldn’t wait to greet him.
“Kumo is our guardian dog. [He’s] the alpha of our pack and the friendliest [dog] ever. Before Deputy can enter, they must meet before quarantine,” Smith explained in an Instagram video.
As Deputy approached, Kumo immediately extended his paw through the fence. It was his way of telling the newcomer that he was safe and accepted.
Thriving With Love And Safety
After completing his quarantine, Deputy was introduced to the sanctuary pack. The other dogs welcomed him joyfully, and he blended in with ease.
Now free from fear, Deputy loves nothing more than running alongside his new friends, enjoying the simple joys of play. His bond with Smith also grew quickly—he adores cuddling with her and offering affectionate hugs.
The once-sad stray has transformed completely. The sorrow in his eyes has vanished, replaced with a sparkle of happiness and hope.
Thanks to the love and security he found at the Texas sanctuary, Deputy has blossomed into a confident, joyful pup.
