Archie Bean’s terrifying little adventure left both his family and rescuers completely shaken.
The Pekingese puppy was only 12 weeks old and weighed just five pounds when he slipped through an uncovered vent inside his home in Douglas County, Colorado. In one awful moment, Archie vanished into the house’s vent system and ended up trapped there for nearly three hours.
His owner, Monique, searched in a panic, but she could not figure out exactly where he had gotten stuck. As his cries carried through the home and the minutes kept passing without an answer, she knew she could not handle it alone.
Monique quickly called South Metro Fire Rescue, hoping they could find Archie before time ran out.
A Race Against Time To Find Archie
Emergency responders arrived swiftly. Teams from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Plumbline Services joined the effort, but the situation proved more complex than expected.
Archie had fallen through a vent opening that spanned three floors, landing somewhere inside the home’s ductwork.
“I took the other dogs to go out, and so he jumped off my son’s bed and right into this hole, and my son said he could see him going like this and he tried to get him, but there’s a lot of nails and stuff,” Monique said in the rescue video posted by SMFR.
For hours, Archie’s faint cries echoed through the walls, making it nearly impossible to pinpoint his exact location.
“Every time I hear him cry, wherever I am, whichever vent I am next to, it sounds like that’s where he is. So that’s why we can’t tell where he is,” Archie’s owner said.
Rescue teams used a small camera to explore the ducts and search for Archie. They carefully cut into several wall sections to improve access.
As time passed, hope began to fade. Then, at last, the camera revealed a pair of frightened eyes: Archie had been located inside the basement’s HVAC system.
A Tearful Reunion After Hours Of Uncertainty
Rescuers rushed to the basement and gently pulled Archie from the ductwork, placing him safely in Monique’s arms.
Though visibly shaken and confused, Archie was miraculously unharmed.
“That is a prayer answered… He went from the third floor down to the basement and he doesn’t have a cut on him,” Monique told SMFR.
After the emotional reunion, Monique expressed heartfelt thanks to the rescue teams for their tireless efforts and compassion.
“As Archie happily reunites with his grateful owners, the community celebrates a tale of compassion and resilience in the face of adversity,” SMFR wrote in a Facebook statement.
Now safe and sound, Archie is back home with his fellow canine companions. Despite the terrifying experience, he’s once again enjoying life in his Colorado home, and hopefully steering clear of any more vent openings.
