Nervous California Puppy Rescued From The Streets Thanks To Kind Horse Vet

There’s no question that love is the most powerful remedy for fear.

That’s especially true in the animal world, where so many dogs and other animals face scary situations every single day.

Abandonment, predators, cars whizzing by, threats of harm—there’s no fear that love can’t slowly undo.

Van Buren’s story is living proof of that.

As a nervous young pup roaming the streets of California, he never imagined that fear would be replaced with safety. But it did.

From Street Visits To A Safe Place

Van Buren’s life turned around on an ordinary day. He was wandering the street he’d later be named after when Mary, a local horse vet from California, noticed him.

With her veterinary background, Mary could tell right away that this pup was desperate for help. He couldn’t say it with words, but his eyes spoke volumes. The only challenge was, he was far too timid to approach.

Still, Mary didn’t give up. She stopped by daily, bringing food and slowly earning his trust. Over time, Van Buren started warming up to her. Bit by bit, they built a connection until finally, he let her pet him.

Just days later, he even let her attach a leash.

Trust was the next hurdle. Instead of taking him to a shelter, Mary brought him to her horse ranch and it was the best decision she could’ve made.

Today, Van Buren is a happy, confident pup.

“She has had him for over a month and has worked with him every day and he’s a lovely dog. He is now vaccinated and neutered. We think approximately 6 months. Sort of a lab mix. He’s about 50lbs,” says Van Buren’s Petfinder profile.

In just a short time, this once-fearful dog learned to socialize and follow commands. He’s made friends with other dogs and animals too. And when it comes to people, he’s completely smitten!

Van Buren is great with kids and adults alike, making him a fantastic fit for nearly any home.

“He’s good with people and other dogs. He’s really a nice dog and would make a great pet for someone looking for a large dog,” his profile reads.

For now, Van Buren is soaking up life on Mary’s ranch, surrounded by fresh air and space to play. After everything he endured, he finally feels safe and cherished.

What he truly needs, though, is a forever family. Mary is hopeful the right adopters will come along and give this sweet pup the life he deserves.

He shouldn’t have to face the streets again. All he needs is love because that’s exactly what he gives.
