The team from Stray Rescue of St. Louis wasted no time in answering Odell’s plea.
When they arrived, they discovered a small brown and white puppy curled tightly in the ditch. She was clearly hurting, yet when Chief Life Saving Officer Donna Lochmann approached, the pup managed to wag her tail.
In honor of the man who had first seen her, they gave her the name Odella.
Odella’s gentle nature shone through, but her body told another story.
She was frail, her strength fading, and though her injuries weren’t immediately visible, it quickly became clear that her condition was far more serious than anyone had imagined.
Hidden Pain Revealed
“We couldn’t tell at first, but sadly our clinic informed us that she has some significant injuries. X-rays indicate a dislocated hip and broken foot,” the rescue shared in their blog.
Odella was only six months old when a car struck her, leaving her alone and hurting with no one to help.
Because Odell made that crucial call, she was finally given the care she so desperately needed.
“To picture her quivering in that ditch all by herself and hurting breaks our heart. We are so grateful to the truck driver who somehow spotted her and saved her life. Her healing journey begins today,” they added.
A Long Journey Toward Healing
Veterinarians immediately set to work on her injured leg. They carefully repositioned her hip, which had been dislocated, and secured it with a splint to keep it stable.
At first, her recovery seemed straightforward.
But hidden complications from a fractured femur stretched her healing far longer than expected. After months of rest and attentive medical care, Odella was able to stand and walk once more.
During this time, she lived with foster mom Donna, who had already welcomed several rescue dogs into her home.
It quickly became clear that Odella had found the place she was meant to stay.
A Life Surrounded By Love
From the very first day inside Donna’s house, Odella fit in as if she had always belonged.
“She just never left. She came in, unpacked her bags, and that was pretty much it!” Donna said in a Facebook comment, confirming what everyone already suspected—Odella had claimed her spot in the family.
Now Odella spends her days surrounded by affection and the company of her furry siblings.
“She has the happiest personality and bounces from one dog to another to find one that will keep playing! She loves her toys and peanut butter kongs,” Donna wrote.
And all of this happiness began with one simple act of kindness. A truck driver noticed a puppy in need and refused to turn away.
