Alabama Puppies Were Abandoned And So Small That Nobody Could Tell Their True Breed

Crossing paths with an abandoned puppy is always heartbreaking. Finding an entire litter struggling to survive is even harder.

Sadly, countless puppies are dumped by irresponsible owners every year. Alone and fragile, their odds of making it without human help are slim.

One such case unfolded in Alabama, where a man stumbled upon six tiny pups in desperate need of rescue. Motherless, sick, and covered in mange, they had little chance of surviving on their own.

Six Pups On The Brink

A compassionate man was driving to work when he noticed movement in the woods. To his surprise, six tiny, hairless creatures were huddled together. At first glance, he could not even tell if they were dogs. Their skin was raw and pink, and they looked more like wild animals than puppies.

With no mother in sight, he knew he had to help. The man carefully gathered the pups and rushed them to a local shelter in Sylacauga, Alabama, where staff offered food, warmth, and basic care.

But their condition was far beyond what the small shelter could manage. The puppies were weak, suffering from advanced mange, and in need of urgent medical attention.

When Jaquie Cobb, of Second City Canine Rescue in Illinois saw the shelter’s plea for help, they acted quickly.

“They were abandoned in the woods when they were too young to be away from their mother,” SCCR wrote.

The team could not determine their breed but assumed they belonged to a small dog family.

Each weighed only about five pounds, and their appearance led rescuers to guess they might be Cocker Spaniels.

The pups were transferred to Auburn Veterinary College for specialized treatment. There, veterinarians diagnosed them with sarcoptic mange

Nicole Zaguroli of SCCR recalled how severe their condition was: the odor was so strong that staff had to wear masks while bathing them.

With repeated medicated baths and proper meals, the puppies slowly began to heal.

As their fur started growing back in soft curls, rescuers thought they might actually be Poodle mixes. Still, they could not be certain.

DNA Reveals The Truth

To solve the mystery, a DNA test was ordered. The results stunned everyone.

All six puppies were purebred Great Pyrenees.

The revelation made sense as soon as the pups began gaining weight and sprouting thick, white coats. Within weeks, the once hairless babies started resembling the giant guardian dogs they truly were.

The litter was placed in foster homes, where they learned basic manners, socialization, and the joys of safe indoor living.

Within a few short months, their transformation was complete. The puppies were active, affectionate, and ready for adoption. One by one, each was matched with a forever family eager to give them the love they had always deserved.

Now thriving, the once unrecognizable puppies are steadily growing toward their expected adult size of nearly 100 pounds.

Despite their rough start, they remain playful, sweet, and full of love, proof that with a second chance, even the most hopeless beginnings can turn into happy endings.
