Dog abuse is sadly nothing new, yet it continues to break our hearts every time.
Maya is not only an example of cruelty. She represents every neglected, abandoned, or mistreated dog who has ever been failed by humans. She is a symbol of survival and a reminder of what can happen when people act with thoughtlessness.
Thankfully, Maya’s painful story did not end on that deserted road. In reality, it was only the beginning.
Left Behind

A woman named April saw Maya’s owner tie her to a fence on an empty street and walk away without looking back. Realizing he had no intention of returning, April immediately contacted Underdog Heroes in California.
“Sweet girl Maya was overbred, abused, neglected, and discarded like trash, chained up in over 100 degree weather without food or water in the middle of nowhere,” UH wrote on Facebook.
April could not understand how someone could abandon her like that.
“She was just looking at me with these really sad eyes. I couldn’t understand why the owner had just left her there,” April told The Dodo.

She stayed with Maya until the rescue volunteers arrived.
The pit bull was frightened and unsure. Her body was covered in fleas and scabies, and she was still lactating, which made the situation even more heartbreaking. She underwent multiple surgeries and spent time with a trainer who helped her relearn the basics.
When the team felt she was ready, Maya moved into a foster home.
“She spent some time with our trainer, and after several months, we were finally able to find her the most amazing foster family who soon decided they could not let her go and she is now home forever,” the rescue wrote.

Claire and Tom welcomed Maya with open arms.
She was still cautious, but she slowly adjusted to her new life.
A Family That Would Not Let Go

It quickly became clear to Claire and Tom that Maya had found her place. They had no intention of letting her leave.
“The plan was just to foster her and we fell in love with her, and we couldn’t let her go. Having Maya now has completed our family and we plan a lot of trips around her,” Tom and Claire told The Dodo.
Now the three of them share their days together. Maya enjoys playing in the yard, but she also has a love for exploring. Hiking soon became one of her favorite activities, and her new family creates travel plans with her in mind.
One of her biggest adventures was her first glamping trip.
“We love to go hiking and we love to go on adventures,” they said.

For the trip, Maya wore a cozy jacket and happily investigated every corner of the cabin. She enjoyed the large window, the warm space, and most of all, the chance to experience it beside her family.
After everything she endured, Maya is finally safe, cherished, and home at last.
Have a beautiful life, Maya.
