Supporting a dog who has spent years living in a shelter environment brings its own unique set of hurdles. Rescuers know that extended stays leave a deep mark on these animals, even when their essential needs are carefully provided for.
Regular meals, tidy surroundings, and enrichment activities offer moments of comfort, but they can never fully replace the security and belonging that come with a true home.
Every rescuer holds onto the hope of seeing their dogs chosen by loving families, though the journey rarely happens overnight. Some dogs linger far longer than anyone wishes, despite having so much love and personality to share.
That was true for Punkin, a gentle and affectionate dog who had spent far too much time at the shelter and needed a little extra support to finally meet the person meant for her.
Waiting For Someone To Notice Her
After more than 1,000 days at The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, staff members began to worry that Punkin might never get her chance.
She was playful, gentle, and affectionate, but adopters continued to overlook her.
Punkin loves forming bonds with people, but she does not reveal her personality right away. To those meeting her for the first time, she may seem quiet or reserved, which can make her appear less engaging than she truly is.
She simply needs a little extra time to feel comfortable. Unfortunately, that hesitation often causes potential adopters to move on before she can show her true nature.
Punkin also prefers select canine companions, which can be a challenge for households with multiple dogs.
Then came a turning point. A woman behind the account RescueMeATL saw Punkin’s story and wanted to help. Knowing how long Punkin had been waiting, she decided to use her platform to bring attention to the overlooked pup.
Sharing Her Story With The World
She recorded a video featuring Punkin and posted it online. The response was immediate. People from many places began commenting and expressing support for the sweet dog.
One commenter wrote: “Thank you for bringing attention to this beautiful girl. I hope she finds her forever home soon.”
It was a sentiment shared by many who watched the video. Punkin seemed more than ready to finally move into the loving home she had been dreaming of.
Another person added: “Thank you for showing her love while she awaits her forever home she so deserves.”

Punkin’s caregivers have done everything they can to give her comfort each day. Their dedication has helped her remain affectionate, even after such a long stay.
Someone else commented: “What a sweetie! She just needs the right family! I hope people see this baby and get her out of the shelter!”
The wave of encouragement has brought new hope. With her story now spreading, the chances of Punkin finding the right family have grown stronger.
Although her future is still unfolding, one thing is certain. Punkin is surrounded by people who care deeply about her and who are committed to helping her find the life she deserves.
