For dogs, their human family means absolutely everything.
Most pups spend their whole lives surrounded by love and companionship, so when that suddenly disappears, the heartbreak is overwhelming.
Sadly, that’s exactly what happened to the dog in today’s story.
Left Behind

When Janine Guido, founder of Speranza Animal Rescue in Pennsylvania, received a call about a stray wandering around Harrisburg, she knew she had to investigate.
After some searching, she finally spotted the poor pup rummaging through a dumpster, desperately trying to find something to eat. The moment she approached, he bolted — straight back to the porch of the home where he once lived.
The confused dog sat there, waiting, as if expecting his family to open the door and welcome him inside like they always had.
He simply couldn’t understand why his people had packed up and moved away without him.
When Janine tried once more to get closer, the dog scratched frantically at the door, still clinging to hope that someone would answer.

Even food couldn’t tempt him. He had no interest in treats — his entire focus remained on the life and family he had lost.
Eventually, the sad reality sank in. The house was empty. No one was coming back for him.
Hearing Janine’s gentle voice assuring him that she was there to help, he finally surrendered.
“It sounds dumb but I swear he knew what I was saying to him. He literally came over and sat down and allowed me to leash him,” said Janine.
With tears in her eyes, Janine led him away from the porch. On the drive to the rescue, she spoke softly, promising him that from now on, he would be safe and loved.
At The Rescue

The dog, now named Cupid, needed time to adjust to everything that had happened.
Although surrounded by kind people and other dogs, his sadness lingered. He was friendly and sweet, greeting everyone with a wagging tail, but you could still sense his confusion.

At Speranza Animal Rescue, Cupid was given the best care possible. He was immediately taken to the vet for a thorough exam to make sure he was healthy.
Once his checkup is complete, he’ll be ready to start searching for a forever family — one that will love him the way he always deserved.
“I don’t think that [a forever home] will be hard to find because he truly is the sweetest guy,” Janine said.
Final Word
Cupid’s loyalty and gentle nature prove just how incredible dogs are, even after experiencing heartbreak. There’s no doubt he’ll find a loving family soon.
But let his story serve as a reminder: abandoning a dog is never okay. After everything they give us — their love, loyalty, and companionship — they deserve so much more in return.
If you ever find yourself unable to care for your pet, please take them to a shelter where they’ll be given another chance at happiness.
