Shelter dogs rarely have control over their routines. Their days pass in the same pattern, and each one waits for the moment a family chooses them before their time is up.
For Sandy, a sweet forty-pound Pittie, that moment almost slipped away. After her adopters returned her, she stayed curled up in her kennel, watching other dogs leave with families while her own future dimmed.
A Tiny Pittie With A Heavy Heart
Madeline, a volunteer based in Houston, could not ignore Sandy’s situation. After learning she had been returned, Madeline visited her and began posting her story on Instagram and TikTok, hoping someone would notice her before it was too late.
Sandy had been placed on the euthanasia list because she was heartworm positive and selective about other dogs.
“Sandy’s deadline is in less than 24 hours. She even came in with a homemade collar. I hope someone can love her again,” Madeline wrote in one of the videos.
Sandy had no idea how urgent her situation was, but the videos of her peering out from her kennel while people walked by were painful to watch.
“She is here at the shelter as an adoption return and staff says she should be an only dog. She is the DEFINITION of a pocket Pittie and I am SHOCKED to see that she’s 40 lbs. She’s seriously teeny teeny tiny,” Madeline explained.
From inside her kennel, Sandy wagged her tail softly as she watched others leave with adopters, hoping someone would stop for her. But no one did.
Madeline refused to give up. Thanks to her advocacy, Sandy’s scheduled euthanasia was pushed back by two more days.
Those additional hours would change everything for her.

“I know with her heartworms and dog selectiveness she’ll be a hard sell but I know she’d make someone very happy,” Madeline shared online.
