Missouri Pup Lost For Two Long Months Is Found Curled Up Alone In The Darkness Of A Cave

It’s heartbreaking when a beloved pet vanishes, especially when that companion has been part of the family for many years.

But sometimes, even the bleakest situations can turn into stories of courage, persistence, and unexpected reunions. This one proves that miracles can truly happen.

A Morning Walk Turns Into Heartache

One morning, Missouri resident Jeff Bohnert headed out for his usual morning walk with his dogs, Summer and Abby. But when he opened the door, only Summer came bounding forward. Abby, his 13-year-old companion, was nowhere to be seen.

The day before, both dogs had been playing outside together. Now, Abby had simply vanished without a trace.

Jeff worried that the scorching heat might have overwhelmed his aging pup. He and his wife, Kathy, immediately launched a desperate search: knocking on neighbors’ doors, asking around, and sharing Abby’s photo all over Facebook.

Days turned into weeks with no sign of her. As hope faded, the couple began to fear they would never see their sweet girl again.

Almost two months later, members of the Cave Research Foundation were mapping the Moore Cave System in Missouri. The group included about 30 participants, five fathers and their children among them, who had gathered for what was expected to be a simple project weekend under the guidance of experienced lead caver, Frank Keene.

Everything went smoothly until one of the children pointed and exclaimed, “Daddy, there’s a puppy!” At first, the adults dismissed it. But the boy kept insisting until finally the cavers investigated.

To their astonishment, lying motionless at the bottom of a 12-foot pit was a frail dog.

The sight stunned the entire team. But lead caver Frank Keene and fellow rescuer Rick Haley quickly composed themselves and sprang into action.

A Rescue Like No Other

Frank immediately snapped a picture of the dog and hurried out of the cave to recruit help.

He reached out to his friend, Assistant Fire Chief Rob Calhoun, asking him to identify the animal’s owner. Rob began knocking on doors with the photo, and before long, a neighbor recognized her as Abby, the Bohnerts’ missing dog.

Meanwhile, Haley and Keene stayed below, preparing to lift the weakened pup out of the narrow shaft.

The only exit was the same opening she had fallen through, and Abby was far too weak to climb.

Haley improvised: he placed a soft blanket inside a large duffle bag and gently slid it beside her. To everyone’s relief, Abby crawled inside on her own, clearly grateful for the warmth after weeks on the cold rock floor.

The two rescuers worked in tandem. They zipped the bag carefully, leaving her head out, and began the painstaking task of carrying her upward.

“I’d hand her up, he’d set her down, he’d move up, then I’d move up, then we’d hand her up again,” Haley later explained.

The process took nearly 90 exhausting minutes. At last, they reached the surface, where Assistant Chief Calhoun lifted Abby into his arms and carried her out into the sunlight.

When word reached Jeff Bohnert, he could hardly believe it. Soon, he was reunited with Abby, holding his once-lost companion through tears of relief.

Tears Of Joy

“She must have fallen into a sinkhole or a hidden entrance,” Jeff said emotionally, still marveling at her survival.

Soon, he was reunited with Abby, holding his once-lost companion through tears of relief.

Their daughter, Rachel, who was away at college, was equally ecstatic when she heard the news.

“You can’t imagine the joy Rachel felt when she heard,” her mother said excitedly.

One week after the rescue, Haley happened to see Abby again. Though still thin and regaining her strength, she was on the mend thanks to careful feeding from Jeff and Kathy.

This time, Haley heard her bark, a sound he hadn’t heard during the rescue itself.

“Shell be okay,” he said with a proud smile, confident in her recovery.

After almost three months trapped underground, Abby was finally safe at home, surrounded by the people who loved her most.

Her story is living proof that with perseverance, kindness, and a little faith, even the most impossible situations can turn around.
