Illinois Pup Is Left Behind In A Shelter For Over 365 Days And Begins To Shut Down

If there’s one thing we’ve sadly seen too often in dog stories, it’s pups stuck in shelters struggling to find homes.

Looking closely, it becomes clear there’s nothing wrong with these dogs. They just end up with unfortunate luck, and that can negatively affect their lives.

Many dogs begin to feel down after spending extended time in shelters. The constant noise and loneliness are overwhelming, and some start to shut down.

That’s exactly what happened with Brutus, a pup taken in by the Humane Society of Central Illinois (HSCI), and his story is incredibly sad.

Like many dogs, Brutus had been left behind by his owner, but he wasn’t actually surrendered to a shelter.

He was abandoned on the streets of Illinois, and rescuers ended up finding him there.

Once he realized help had arrived, he allowed the rescuers to bring him in. They did their best to locate his original owner.

After getting a contact number, they reached out to a woman who explained she had moved to Tennessee and didn’t plan to come back for Brutus.

This crushed the rescuers, who had hoped maybe Brutus had simply gone missing. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

His owner had no interest in taking him back. So the rescue team stepped in to help him adjust while they searched for someone new who would care for him.

The team in Illinois believed they’d find a match quickly, but things didn’t turn out that way. As the days passed, Brutus was stuck in an upsetting situation.

Each passing day left him more withdrawn and discouraged. Being repeatedly overlooked made things even worse.

After spending a full year in the shelter, Brutus was having a hard time holding on. Wanting to help, the rescuers shared his story on their TikTok channel.

Their goal was to raise awareness and hopefully catch the eye of someone who would give Brutus the life he deserves.

In the video, they shared how they try to comfort him at the shelter, but it’s no longer making a difference.

Brutus is a sweet, people-loving dog. He has a stubborn side, but he’s trainable and would do best with someone who has a strong personality.

He also doesn’t do well with other dogs. The rescuers aren’t sure why, but he would need to be the only dog in the home.

They also mentioned that he’s very energetic and has become a bit down due to his situation, but they believe that would turn around quickly if he had a real home.

Even though his odds have grown slimmer after being in the shelter for a full year, the rescuers remain committed to finding someone who will adopt him.

Here’s hoping that Brutus finds the kind of person who truly sees him and gives him the love he’s been waiting for.
