Every day, stray dogs drift through city streets looking for whatever they can find to ease the ache of hunger.
They keep going on very little, carrying the same quiet hope from one morning to the next, that maybe someone will finally notice them and offer a way out.
Tanner was living that kind of life. He wandered through the streets of Houston, Texas, waiting without knowing if anything would ever really change. Then it did.
Rescuers brought him into a local shelter, and for the first time, the possibility of safety was right in front of him.
It did not take the staff long to realize Tanner was no ordinary dog. There was something immediately special about him, a warmth and sweetness that set him apart the moment they got to know him.
A Tender Pup In Dire Circumstances
From the moment he entered the shelter, Tanner eagerly sought a family of his own. Yet as the weeks passed without visitors choosing him, his chances began to dwindle.
After three weeks, the overcrowded shelter could no longer accommodate him, and Tanner’s name was sadly added to the euthanasia list.
That was when Madeline Garvis Smith, a dedicated dog advocate, visited. She was instantly moved when Tanner wrapped his paws around her, offering one of his unforgettable, heartfelt hugs.
He captured her heart immediately, and she knew she would do everything possible to keep him safe.
“He was pure love; almost starved for attention. Putting him back in his kennel was the hardest part, because I knew he was just so lonely. I meet a lot of dogs, but some just pull on your heartstrings more than others. Tanner was one of them,” said Garvis Smith.
Madeline frequently shares stories of shelter dogs on her Instagram, and she posted Tanner’s story to show the world that he was a loving boy who only needed someone to give him a chance.
Tanner’s affectionate personality shone through with everyone he met. He climbed into volunteers’ laps, craving more cuddles, and delighted in being held as close as possible. Even at a year old, he adored being treated like a baby.
Finding A Path To Rescue
As time ran short, Garvis Smith urgently searched for a foster home for Tanner. Her appeal was answered by Kari, a foster mom who happily offered him a safe and loving place to stay.
When it was finally time to leave the shelter, Tanner made a point of saying goodbye to his caretakers, wrapping them in gentle hugs to express his gratitude for their care and kindness.
The moment he stepped outside with Kari, his tail wagged with excitement. He sensed that brighter days were just ahead.
Once he climbed into Kari’s car, she kissed him, filled with relief and happiness knowing that Tanner’s life had been spared.
Initially shy in his foster home, Tanner quickly realized he was safe and loved. Soon, he was asking for pets, basking in the attention of his foster family, and soaking up every moment of affection.

Tanner’s next step will be traveling to the Animal Rescue Network of New England, where he will remain until he finds the forever home he has been dreaming of.
