For dogs, their human family means the entire world.
For the dogs who live their days surrounded by affection and companionship, the sorrow is immense when they lose it.
Sadly, that’s exactly what happened to the dog in this story.
Waiting On The Porch
Janine Guido, founder of Speranza Animal Rescue in Pennsylvania, received a call about a stray wandering around Harrisburg. She knew she had to check it out.
After searching, she spotted the pup digging through a dumpster, desperately looking for food. But the moment she approached, he bolted straight back to the porch of the home where he once lived.
The bewildered pup stayed on the porch, waiting as though his family might open the door and let him back in like before. He simply couldn’t grasp why his people had packed up and gone without him.
When Janine made another attempt to approach, the dog clawed desperately at the door, holding on to the hope that someone inside would respond.
Even food couldn’t tempt him. He ignored treats, his focus locked on the family he had lost.
Eventually, the truth sank in. The house was empty. No one was coming back.
Hearing Janine’s gentle voice promising she was there to help, he finally gave in.
“It sounds dumb but I swear he knew what I was saying to him. He literally came over and sat down and allowed me to leash him,” said Janine.
With tears in her eyes, Janine gently guided him away from the porch. During the drive to the rescue, she spoke in a calm voice, promising that from this moment forward, he would be safe and cherished.
Adjusting To Rescue Life
The pup, now given the name Cupid, needed time to absorb everything he had experienced.
Even though he was surrounded by kind people and other dogs, the sadness stayed with him. He remained sweet and friendly, wagging his tail to greet everyone, yet the confusion in his eyes was still obvious.
At Speranza Animal Rescue, Cupid was provided with the very best care. He was taken to the veterinarian for a thorough exam to ensure his health was in good shape.
Once his checkup is finished, he will be ready to begin searching for a forever family, one that will love him the way he always deserved.
“I don’t think that [a forever home] will be hard to find because he truly is the sweetest guy,” Janine said.
A Reminder For Us All
Cupid’s devotion and gentle spirit reveal just how remarkable dogs can be, even after heartbreak. There’s no question he will soon find a family to love him.
His journey serves as a reminder: leaving a dog behind is never acceptable.
