Animal cruelty has hit a troubling high in recent years.
Because of neglectful owners, many dogs end up abandoned and homeless. To make things worse, they’re often forced to survive brutal weather while searching for safety.
That’s what happened to one pregnant dog and her pup in Southern California, who were left behind on the streets with no food after their owner drove off.
They spent their days on a sidewalk, huddled inside small cardboard boxes, all while a major storm was on the way.
They Were All Each Other Had
A few local residents spotted the pair wandering the street and acted quickly.
Rather than leave them exposed, the neighbors built a makeshift shelter using cardboard boxes, an old chair, and a few warm blankets so the pups would have a place to rest.
“The kind neighbors made boxes for beds and a chair with blankets and beds. Sweet little babies each had their little boxes. And they each slept in their own,” Suzette Hall says in a Facebook post.
But they knew that wouldn’t be enough.
With the storm approaching and the mom expecting puppies, the neighbors reached out to Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy in Irvine, California, and her colleague, Mary.
“Yesterday these two babies were dumped with nothing but each other. They would go up and down the street looking for the ones they once trusted. The neighbors couldn’t believe it,” Hall continues.
Seeing the pups and their makeshift beds was heartbreaking for Hall. Just imagining how scared they must have been was overwhelming.
Fortunately, help came quickly.
Mary gently picked up the pup, but the mother was too nervous to be handled just yet.
Suzette set up a humane trap with some tasty food nearby, and within minutes, the mom had been safely secured.
“I reunited them together in the trap and we drove away from their little box beds,” Suzette concludes.
Safe At Last
The two were soon taken to a vet for evaluation and care. With clean bills of health, they’ll be ready to move on to either a foster or forever home.
Thanks to the quick actions of Suzette, Mary, and the kind neighbors, both dogs were saved just in time — and are now on the path to a brand-new beginning.
