“We found a younger female dog that was so weak and tired that she could barely stand up on her own. She clearly has had a terrible first year of life and was about to give up,” Christopher stated on Facebook.

Months of severe neglect had taken their toll. Maria weighed only nineteen pounds, her energy gone and her blood pressure dangerously low. The rescue organization confirmed the heartbreaking truth: her state of health had developed over many weeks of mistreatment and deprivation.
“This did not happen overnight. Maria got this way from weeks, months of neglect. She’s also covered in fleas,” the Pennsylvania rescue added in the post.
Despite the odds, Maria’s fighting spirit kept her alive. With immediate treatment, gentle handling, and continuous attention from her caregivers, she slowly began the first steps toward recovery.
Maria’s medical team worked tirelessly to stabilize her. She was given consistent medication, monitored day and night, and supported by caring volunteers from Philly Bully Team. Gradually, her fragile body began to respond.
In time, veterinarians determined that Maria was suffering from cat scratch fever, an infection caused by Bartonella bacteria. The diagnosis required long-term antibiotics and careful observation.
