North Carolina has truly become a haven for dogs and their owners.
My golden retriever, Max, and I have explored the state together, uncovering amazing places where pups are treated like royalty.
Whether it’s staying in pet-friendly hotels with special room service for dogs or hitting scenic hiking trails and dog-friendly beaches, the Tar Heel State goes above and beyond to welcome our four-legged friends.
1. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden – Belmont

Last spring, Max and I strolled through this 380-acre horticultural wonderland during their special “Pups in the Garden” event. The staff greeted him with homemade treats and fresh water stations positioned throughout the meticulously landscaped grounds.
What amazed me most was the dedicated “Bark Garden” section featuring non-toxic plants safe for curious canine sniffers. Max particularly enjoyed the sensory garden with its variety of textures and scents designed specifically for dogs to explore.
They even offer professional pet photography sessions among the blooming seasonal flowers. The Garden hosts monthly yappy hours where dogs and their humans can socialize while enjoying the botanical beauty.
2. The Umstead Hotel & Spa – Cary

Luxury knows no bounds for four-legged guests at this five-star establishment. When Max and I checked in, he received a personalized welcome note, plush dog bed, and gourmet treats crafted by the hotel’s pastry chef.
The concierge presented him with a special doggy room service menu featuring dishes like grilled chicken and steamed vegetables. They even provide a map of nearby dog-friendly trails and a schedule of pet massage services.
What truly set The Umstead apart was their “Pampered Pooch Package” which included a professional dog walker while I enjoyed the spa. Max returned from his walk sporting a bandana embroidered with the hotel’s logo – a souvenir fit for canine royalty!
3. Aloft Asheville – Asheville

“Arf” is practically this hotel’s middle name! Upon arrival, Max was presented with his own Aloft-branded dog bed, bowls, and a goodie bag filled with treats and toys. The staff knew him by name throughout our stay, making him feel like the VIP he truly is.
Their foster dog program stole my heart – the hotel partners with local rescues to host adoptable dogs in the lobby. Guests can even take these pups for walks or playdates! Max made friends with a sweet rescue named Bella during our visit.
My favorite touch was the “Woof Deck” – a dedicated outdoor space where dogs can socialize while their humans enjoy craft beers from local Asheville breweries.
4. Chimney Rock State Park – Chimney Rock

Hiking with Max at Chimney Rock was an unforgettable adventure! Park rangers handed out doggy bandanas and trail maps highlighting the most pup-friendly paths. They even maintain water stations along the trails specifically for four-legged hikers.
The park hosts seasonal “Hike With Your Hound” guided tours where naturalists point out interesting scents and sights from a dog’s perspective. Max particularly enjoyed the special photo spots marked with paw prints where we could capture perfect panoramic memories together.
After our hike, we cooled off at the dedicated dog splash zone near the visitor center. The gift shop even carries locally-made organic dog treats shaped like the famous Chimney Rock!
5. Grandfather Mountain – Linville

Max practically bounced with joy when we visited this majestic mountain. The staff welcomed him with special “Pup Passes” that included a commemorative tag for his collar and access to exclusive dog-friendly trails.
Unlike many attractions, dogs are allowed on the famous Mile-High Swinging Bridge! Max bravely crossed while taking in the breathtaking views. The naturalists at the wildlife habitats gave him special attention, explaining how the resident animals perceive their canine cousins.
My boy especially loved the designated off-leash play area where he made mountain dog friends. The visitor center even features a “Barking Board” where guests post photos of their dogs enjoying Grandfather Mountain adventures!
6. Bond Park – Cary

This urban oasis became our weekend happy place! Max immediately felt like park royalty with the abundant treat stations maintained by local pet businesses. The 3-mile loop around the lake features special low-water fountains designed just for thirsty pups.
The dedicated off-leash dog beach section of the lake had Max splashing with joy. Park rangers distribute free biodegradable waste bags and even offer training tips for dogs still learning park etiquette.
What truly makes Bond Park special is their monthly “Yappy Hour” events featuring dog-friendly ice cream trucks, pet portrait photographers, and adoption drives. Max’s favorite activity was the agility course that changes layout monthly to keep regular visitors engaged and challenged!
7. Outer Banks – Various Locations

Beach paradise for pups! Max couldn’t contain his excitement when his paws first touched the sandy shores of the OBX. Many beaches here allow dogs year-round, with some restrictions during peak tourist season that are clearly marked with paw-print signs.
Local restaurants like The Blue Point in Duck and Pangea Tavern in Avon welcomed Max with water bowls and special doggy menus. The Outer Banks even has dog-specific surf lessons – Max wasn’t quite brave enough for hanging ten, but he loved watching the canine surfers!
Vacation rentals cater to four-legged guests with special welcome baskets and fenced yards. My favorite discovery was the annual “Dogtoberfest” celebration where hundreds of dogs parade along the beach in costume!
8. Moses H. Cone Memorial Park – Blowing Rock

Aristocratic vibes abound at this historic estate! Max strutted like he owned the place along the 25 miles of carriage trails that wind through stunning forests and meadows. The park rangers keep special dog treats at the information desk and provide maps marking dog-friendly water sources.
The highlight was exploring the grounds of the magnificent Cone Manor where Max posed regally on the grand lawn. Fellow dog owners we met shared that the autumn colors make this a must-visit spot for canine photography.
Local legend says the ghost of Moses Cone still walks the grounds with his beloved dogs – perhaps why this place feels so welcoming to four-legged visitors! Max certainly seemed to sense something special as he gazed up at the historic manor house.
9. Freeman Park – Carolina Beach

Beach camping with your best friend? Yes, please! Max lived his best doggy life at Freeman Park, one of the few beaches in North Carolina where dogs can roam off-leash year-round. The moment I unhooked his leash, he zoomed across the sand with pure joy.
Local vendors sell homemade dog treats right on the beach, and some even deliver to your campsite! The community of regular campers formed an unofficial “dog watch” group that helps keep an eye on all the four-legged visitors.
Max made friends with a local dog who showed him the best spots for finding interesting shells and ghost crabs. The sunrise walks along the shoreline with not another soul in sight made this place truly magical for both of us.
10. U.S. National Whitewater Center – Charlotte

Adventure dogs unite! Max couldn’t believe his luck when we discovered this outdoor playground welcomes dogs throughout its 1,300 acres of land. The staff greeted him with enthusiasm, offering trail maps highlighting dog-friendly activities.
While I tackled the whitewater rafting, Max enjoyed the company of a dedicated “dog sitter” who took him on a hike along the scenic trails. Later, we reunited for a meal at the River’s Edge Restaurant where dogs have their own dining area with special water bowls.
The Center hosts regular “Yappy Hours” and dog-specific events like the annual “Dog Days of Summer” festival. Max particularly loved watching the kayakers from the shoreline, barking encouragement as they navigated the rapids!
11. Hendersonville – Hendersonville

This charming mountain town rolled out the red carpet for Max! Downtown Hendersonville features water bowls outside nearly every shop and restaurant. Many stores invited him inside, with some shopkeepers keeping treat jars by their registers specifically for four-legged customers.
The historic Henderson County Courthouse lawn hosts weekly “Pups on Main” gatherings where local dogs socialize while their humans enjoy live music. Max received a special bandana from the visitors’ center marking him as an honorary Hendersonville citizen!
Our favorite discovery was the annual “Paws for Love” festival where local businesses create elaborate dog-friendly booths and compete for the “Most Dog-Loving Business” award. The ice cream shop even serves special doggy sundaes that had Max licking his chops for hours!
12. Blowing Rock – Blowing Rock

This picturesque mountain town treats dogs like celebrities! Max received the royal treatment at the famous Blowing Rock attraction where staff provided special secure viewing areas for dogs to safely enjoy the spectacular vistas alongside their humans.
Downtown shops not only welcome dogs but cater to them with specialized boutiques selling locally-made treats and accessories. The town’s central park features a drinking fountain with a special lower bowl just for four-legged visitors.
The highlight of our visit was the Blowing Rock Inn, which offers a “Pampered Pooch Package” complete with in-room dog beds, special room service options, and a map of scenic walking routes. Local restaurants like The Speckled Trout provide outdoor seating with dog menus featuring locally-sourced ingredients!
13. Topsail Island – Surf City

Beach paradise found! Max couldn’t contain his excitement when he realized Topsail’s beaches allow dogs year-round (with seasonal leash restrictions). As soon as his paws touched the soft sand, he was in doggy paradise—chasing waves and digging with pure joy.
Local vacation rentals cater specifically to dog owners with fenced yards and welcome packages including treats from island bakeries. The Surf City Dog Park provided a wonderful break from the beach, with separate areas for large and small dogs and plenty of shade for hot days.
What made our visit extraordinary was the community of dog lovers we met. Locals shared their favorite quiet beach spots and introduced us to the annual “Topsail Tails” event where dogs parade along the shoreline in beachy costumes. Max is already planning his outfit for next year!
